Essays in Love ( I marshmallow you ! )
#1 The other day I once asked each student in my class " What is the most important thing in your life ? " They all have different looks and tastes, however, most of them answered me back in common, " Money is ! " Hmm, " yeah, of course, it is, but Love is more important than anything else to us, my guys, isn't it? I smiled :) We know life itself is the continuous adjustment of internal / external relations.Being tamed by someone/somthing is good, which means 'to establish ties' that I learned from the conversation between the little prince and a fox. I think it's a very long sweet / sour process, so we need not hurry. Actually, I was not familiar with that all before, but as time goes on I've realized it's right. So now I cherish it more than ever!
Essays In Love by Alain de Botton, my all-time favorite writer/ essayist
My beloved excerpts from Essays in Love, p61 :
On the train back to London that evening, I felt exhausted, weary at all the differences between Chloe's early world and mine. While the stories
and settings of her past had enchanted me, they had also proved terrifying and bizarre, all these years and habits before I had known her,but that were as much a part of who she was as the shape of her nose or the colour of her eyes. I felt a primitive nostalgia for familiar surrondings, recognizing the disruption that every relationship entails -- a whole new person to learn about, to suggest myself to, to acclimatize myself to. It was perhaps a moment of fear at the thought of all the differences I would find in Chloe, all the times she would be one thing, and I another, when our world views would be incapable of alignment. Staring out of the window at the Wiltshire countryside, I had a lost child's longing for someone I could already wholly understand, the eccentricities of whose house, parents, and history I had already tamed.
I will love you not just for your wit and talent and beauty, but simply because you are you, with no strings attatched. I love you for who you are deep in your soul, not for the colour of your eyes or the length of your legs or size of your chequebook ...
p. 86 : Then I noticed a small plate of complimentary marshmallows near Chloe's elbow
and it suddenly seemed clear that I didn't love Chloe so much as marshmallow her. What it was about a marshmallow that should suddenly have accorded so perfectly with my feelings towards her I will never know, but the word seemed to capture the essence of my amorous state with an accuracy that the word love, weary with overuse, simply could not aspire to. Even more inexplicably, when I took Chloe's hand and told her that I had something very important to tell her, that I marshmallowed her, she seemed to understand perfectly, answering it was the sweetest thing anyone had ever told her.
scribbling #2 By the way, I've been thinking that the thing is, a timely appearance to each other. If I didn't encounter you there at that time, such things could never happen, but take me in a different direction.. In a sense, life is a set of miracle as long as we do believe in it, right? As for people, there are so many of them, and so many varieties. All I can say that as you have your way, I have my own way, too. But the most important thing is, how much we try to be in harmony little by little every single day, isn't it ? There's only one reason we can say the world is still good to live in. You know that is because... by Sarah
< 원서 : Essays in Love > 의 '나는 너를 마쉬멜로우 해 _ I marshmallow you !
By sarah
