In the past, once you turn 60 then it is time for you to reflect on your achievement and share your wisdom with the next generations. Now? You will find yourself surrounded by new rules, norms, and technologies that are very different from what you have experienced. You will feel lost and left behind rather than feel honored and respected.

Making it worse, due to the increased life expectancy, a life without a purpose could be as almost long as your career.

The Bible is right. You cannot live by bread alone. You need a purpose and self-dignity. If not, the extended life could be a curse rather than a blessing.

Ok, what then?

First, we should pursue horizontal career growth instead of going vertical.

The world is changing too quickly for you to go all in. There used to be times when specific skills and certifications, like MBA and coding skills, were considered the golden keys to your eternal success. However, it didn’t take long until those skills jumped the shark.

It is no longer effective, or even possible, to dedicate everything to one area hoping that the world will be the same tomorrow. Instead, you should be a Renaissance man with a broad range of experience and passion. Don’t aim to become a number one. Instead, try to make yourself unique.

Second, use your resources to stay active and competitive, not for a peaceful retirement.

It’s not your pension or savings that will ensure a successful next chapter of your life. Use your first chapter to build your health, network, reputation, and mindset to learn something new, and most of all, you need to build the courage to give up the past and try the new.

Third, accept the life of a hunter.

Unlike farmers, the hunters have no fixed rules or weekly schedules. Also, they are not afraid of abandoning their homeland.

Go out there and hunt, you have no choice.
