Nato just got bigger and stronger
To celebrate the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, a Lunch Reception was held at the Finnish Ambassador’s residence today. Friends and guests gathered to celebrate this historic moment.
We are living in an era that peace cannot be taken for granted. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 prompted Finland and Sweden to end decades of neutrality and seek membership of NATO, the alliance that was formed as a 12-member bloc in 1949 to ensure collective security. Finland became NATO’s 31st member in April 2023 then Sweden became the 32nd member in March 2024.
These newest allies will fix the vulnerability of the Baltic states and provide a much wider range of strategic options to their NATO allies.
But it doesn’t stop there. These two new members are not joining NATO empty-handed. Despite their long-held neutrality, they have been involved in major arms deals with their world-class defense capabilities in various military platforms. Their accession will make NATO stronger and Europe safer.
Inspiring speech, delicious food, and good wine. It was a perfect way to start Friday.
