Can we create a new Earth?
: About Ecosphere (Eng.ver)
Recently, because of COVID-19 and continued development environmental pollution is becoming serious. In particular seriousness about global warming is a big issue for people on Earth. In this situation, climatologists claim that if we don’t improve Earth’s environment and continue this problem like now, humanity can’t survive on Earth. So many countries and companies are researching the second Earth actively such as NASA (National Aeronautic and Space Administration) returned after they invested in 5,000 exoplanets. From now on, I’ll mainly introduce you to the second Earth.
In fact, researches about the second Earth started long ago. Mars migration research which is receiving most attention exoplanet research and some experiments like Biosphere experiment are main examples. However, all the examples what I told is research and experiments that make the second Earth by using another planet and environment.
But I think if we have to make a second Earth for human living, we should be independent from other environments. We have it in real. It is called “Ecosphere”. Ecosphere is one of the experiments that NASA did. Ecosphere based on this rule ‘Only using limited stuff, make an ecosystem which can continue biological activities.’ Also, it should keep its biological activities without other environmental effects except sunlight.
Well, through this what can we expect and how can we believe this special future technology?
As I told you in front, NASA created a small-scale ecosphere and experimented with a virtual simulation of a space colony. Fill a round glass ball with seawater, some pebbles, and sand, and add a few shrimp and water plants to it. The hole in the glass ball is then melted and sealed.
Since the glass ball, the ecosphere is completely sealed, the shrimp cannot be fed, and the water cannot be changed if it becomes dirty. Everything has to be settled in it. Perhaps, it may seem inferior to a goldfish tank at home. However, the ecosphere is a safe and balanced ecosystem in which organisms interact with each other while repeating the process of production, consumption, and decomposition. Regardless of external factors, shrimp can stay healthy inside the ecosphere. When the ecosphere was well maintained, the shrimp gave birth and reproduced themselves and the shrimp could survive for more than ten years.
The main purpose and most important point of this experiment is to complete another global ecosystem. As a result of this experiment, the possibility of preparing and responding to human extinction due to extreme environmental pollution and the need for continuous research to apply it were recognized.
As such, we can look forward to this great work with interest in the development of the ecosphere. However, our current Earth is too dangerous to be relieved with this ecosphere and research results. We must protect the Earth from environmental pollution and climate crisis so that humanity can survive at least in line with the development of technology and research. Here are some action plans for the Earth that we can put into practice in our daily lives.
We should use public transportation instead of a car and reduce the consumption of disposable items using multi-use items. Also, we should unplug electrical appliances that are not in use and turn off lights in unused spaces. Environmental protection begins with our small efforts. Who knows? Maybe this Earth we live in now, through our climate actions will be born new and become a real "eco" sphere of the second Earth in a stable environment.
