I Want to Ride a Tram
전차 타 보고 싶다
An old tram on display at a city centre museum makes me feel a kind of nostalgia, although trams of the city had disappeared from the streets scarcely before I was born so I've never ridden one of those trams ever in my life.
It is not very fair to say that I feel sort of nostalgic for something I did not actually experience. Then, what about the present, one thing I can deservedly be nostalgic for in the future, whether it's beautiful or not very beautiful?"
Everyone of us longs for wonderful days of life that lead to beautiful memories. But the reality, every moment of our life tends to be bitter, brutal, and even disgusting. They're never likely to be considered good old days in the future. Neither will I possibly miss such horrible days.
What if I 'travel' this city I'm actually living in? As if I were here on a working holiday? Possibly a very compact and happy life with more beautiful memories and less hardships! Any difficulty you can hardly cope with? Then you can just shake the dust off your feet and hit the road towards somewhere else.
“Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” (Luke 9:3-5) said Jesus, sending his disciples on a sort of mission trip.
Easier said than done. But none can ever deny that everyone's life, without any exception, is only once and the span of which is definitely limited, whether you live it with toil and moil or enjoy it travelling all your life. Your permanent address is never permanent after all. Break away from your obsession of your life! It's so easy and simple to change a bit of the way we think of our life.
Time for lunch! I think I'll have a bowl of cold noodle today. The unique noodle is called 'naeng-myeon', a must for those travelling Korea especially in summer. Still a number of local gourmets argue it's even better in winter as it's originally a winter food. Many old restaurants specialising in naeng-myeon are in the city centre of Seoul and that's where old trams used to run.

시내 박물관에 전시된 옛날 전차를 보면 일종의 향수를 느끼게 된다. 이 도시의 전차는 내가 태어나기 얼마 전에 모두 사라져 버려 실제로는 한 번도 타 본 적이 없는데도 불구하고..
내가 실제로 경험하지 못한 것에 대해 향수를 느끼는 것은 이치에 썩 맞지 않는다. 그렇다면 지금 현재는 어떠한가? 아름답든 아름답지 못하든, 미래에 내가 당당히 향수를 느껴도 좋을 지금 현재 말이다.
모든 사람은 아름다운 추억으로 이어지는 행복한 인생을 추구한다. 하지만 현실 속 매 순간은 고통스럽고 잔인하며 역겹기 십상이다. 다 지나 미래에서라도 좋은 시절이었다고 추억하기 대단히 어려울 것만 같고, 아마도 나는 이 험악한 세월을 그리 그리워하지 않을 것만 같기도 하다.
지금 살고 있는 이 도시에 여행을 하러 왔다고 생각하면 어떨까? 워킹홀리데이랄까.. 모르긴 몰라도, 고통은 줄고 아름다운 추억이 막 늘어나는, 단순 담백하고 훨씬 행복한 생활이 펼쳐지지 않을까? 혹 감당되지 않는 어려움이 있다면? 발등 위 먼지를 털어버리고 새로운 곳으로 떠나면 되지 않을까?
예수님은 전도여행을 떠나는 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다.
이르시되 여행을 위하여 아무 것도 가지지 말라 지팡이나 배낭이나 양식이나 돈이나 두 벌 옷을 가지지 말며 어느 집에 들어가든지 거기서 머물다가 거기서 떠나라 누구든지 너희를 영접하지 아니하거든 그 성에서 떠날 때에 너희 발에서 먼지를 떨어 버려 그들에게 증거를 삼으라 하시니 (누가복음 9:3~5)
말은 쉽지만 실천하기 어렵다. 그런데, 아등바등 살든 여행하듯 즐기며 살든, 모든 사람에게 예외 없이 인생은 단 한 번 뿐이고 수명은 각기 다 제한돼 있다는 사실을 부정할 사람은 어디에도 없다. '본적'이란 말을 영어로 바꾸면, permanent address, 즉 '영원한 주소'란 말이 된다. 영원한 주소라.. 혹 무언가 붙잡으면 영원히 누릴 수 있을 것도 같지만, 그런 일은 없다. 요즘은 영원한 주소로 직역되는 본적지를 따질 일조차 없다. 삶의 집착에서 벗어나자. 인생에 대한 생각을 조금만 바꾸면 되는 쉽고 간단한 일이다.
점심때다. 오늘은 시원한 냉면 한 그릇을 먹어야겠다. 냉면은, 특히 여름에 한국을 찾는 여행자들이 반드시 맛보아야 할, 한국 특유의 음식이다. 원래 겨울 음식으로 비롯됐기에 겨울에 더 맛있다는 미식가들의 주장 또한 옳지 않을 수 없다. 오랜 냉면집이 서울 시내 곳곳에 있다. 예전에 전차들이 다니던 곳이다.
