코톨드 피터도이그와 갤러리들, RA에서 남미까지

코톨드 전시. 런던에 온 이후론 페인팅을 많이 좋아하게 되었다. 그런 나의 취향대로 페인팅 전시였는데 피터 도이그라고 꽤 유명한 작가. 너무 좋았다.

작품 자세히 보라고 이런 돋보기 둔 센스.

늘 흥미로운 프로젝트 갤러리 전시. Drawings on Arabian Nights.

그저  유럽/미국 화가들이 이슬람 국가들을 여행하고 그린 그림을 전시한 게 아니라, 오리엔탈리즘이 유행하던 시기, 그리고 그런 그림이 내포한 의미와 인종적 계층과 문화적 우월감이 이 그림들에 내재되어 있는지까지 연구하는 깊이 있는 전시였다.

Orientalist art occupies a complicated and often contradictory position in twenty-first century art history. Since the 1980s, when the scholar Linda Nochlin applied the tenets of Edward Said’s book Orientalism to paintings, these works have been viewed in much Euro-American academic literature as emblems of imperialism that reveal damaging narratives of racial hierarchies and cultural superiority within an aesthetic often reduced to its picturesque quality. This display provides an opportunity to re-engage with Orientalist art in a way that challenges anew their ambivalent status as material witnesses of a bygone past

코톨드 뮤지엄 샵 늘 일 잘해. 

그리고 메이페어 쪽 와서 갤러리 전시 구경. 화이트 큐브 메이슨 야드.  이사무 노구치 작품이 당시 유행이었는지 여기저기서 많이 보여서 다른 건 그냥 그랬는데, 이 작가가 공연 프롭 작업도 했는지 몰라서 이 작품들은 흥미로웠다. 특히 마사 그레이엄 공연에 대한 작업이라니.

Noguchi’s approach to sculpture was inspired in part by his work with the choreographer Martha Graham (1894–1991), for whom he made more than 20 dance settings over three decades.

반면에 처음 보는 작가에 너무 재밌고 톡톡 튀는 작품들로 가득했던 토마스 데인 갤러리. Alexandre da Cunha.

Titled Broken, the show will encompass ideas of redundancy, fragmentation and disrepair as generative and productive forces.

헉슬리 파흘러의 그룹 사진전 Modern Objects 전시.

an exhibition that explores the radical shifts in photography as Modernism dawned. Taking the genre of still life as its conceptual foundation, the exhibition examines image-making in the age of expanding mass-production, burgeoning consumerism, and reification of the object. 

Waddington Custot에서는 photo realism 1966-1985 전시.

마지막으로 RA Royal Academy of Art. 

한국인들이 많이 가는 로얄 칼리지 오브 아트와 많이들 헷갈려 하시는 진짜 명문 로얄 아카데미 오브 아트.

Souls Grown Deep like the Rivers Black Artists from the American South

거의 RA에서 했던 전시 중 역대급으로 인기가 없었던 전시였다. 생소한 작가들이라 아무래도 대중들이 안 간 듯. 심지어 주변 예술 애호가들도 가는 사람을 도통 못 봤다. 

그럼에도 불구하고 난 너무 재밌게 봤다. 

Working in near isolation from established practices, they have created masterpieces that articulate America’s painful past – the inhuman practice of enslavement, the cruel segregationist policies of the Jim Crow era, and institutionalised racism......Made from the materials available locally – like clay, driftwood, roots, soil, recycled and cast-off objects – the 64 works range from the mid 20th century to today. Many respond to issues that are global in nature: from economic inequality, oppression and social marginalisation, to sexuality, the influence of place and ancestral memory.

당시 유행하던 작품 형식이 아닌 데다가 재료들에서 로컬리티가 느껴져서 좋았다.

센스.

런던에 잘 없는 그룹전인데, 기관들이 그룹전 왜 안 여냐고 이제 불평 안 해야겠다... 사람들은 역시 빅 네임들 좋아하나 보다.. 전 세계적으로.
