When I first began working at an oil and gas plant in the middle of the Saudi Arabian desert, I started writing small notes about my daily life on site. At the time, my goal was simple: to share a few glimpses of what it’s like to work in such a place. I chose some photos, added short captions, and thought, “If an engineer who has never set foot on a plant site sees these, maybe it could give them a small taste of the real thing.”
As I kept sharing, messages began to arrive.

Together, these cover the entire process from design to delivery. I had already written and published a book on engineering management, but that one was aimed at experienced professionals. For beginners, it might feel too heavy. So I decided to create something more approachable—focusing on the engineering phase of Oil & Gas Plant EPC projects, since that’s where most newcomers are curious.
Engineering is made up of many specialized disciplines.
Even after studying one at university, it takes years of hands-on experience to truly master it. No one can know everything. My aim here is to give you a clear overview—enough for you to understand what engineering work in an EPC project looks like, even if you’re new to the field. At the same time, I’ve included practical tips for those preparing to enter the industry. Think of this as a guide to what EPC work involves and how you can get ready for it.
Of course, the exact workflow can vary from one company to another. But in general, the process is similar across most EPC firms. If you’re already working in the industry, some of this may feel basic. Still, I believe it can help you understand the roles of other disciplines you might work alongside.
To help you understand engineering work more clearly, I’ve organized this section by discipline. For each discipline, we’ll focus on its main tasks and responsibilities, so you can see how each part contributes to the whole. In addition, we’ll take a brief look at Procurement (P)—an important function within engineering—as well as construction, commissioning, and even the final steps of project completion.
There’s a saying: Opportunity comes to those who are prepared. Getting ready for that opportunity is a smart move. And it’s worth remembering one simple truth: EPC projects are, above all, the work of people.

그런데, 글을 쓰는 중에 몇몇 분께 질문과 메시지를 받았습니다.
주로 플랜트 분야에서 근무 중이신 분들과 플랜트 분야 취업하기 위해 준비 중인 대학생, 그리고 이 분야에 새로 진출하기 위해 관심을 두고 계신 분들이었는데, 주로 사진으로나마 현장을 볼 수 있어 도움이 되었다는 씀과 함께 이 분야에 대해 조금 더 알고 싶다는 내용이었습니다. 요즘 플랜트 산업이 많이 어려움에도 불구하고 아직 관심을 가진 분들이 많이 계신다는 것을 알게 되어 기뻤습니다.
이분들께 필요한 것이 무엇일까 다시 한번 생각해 보았고, 현장 업무뿐 아니라 EPC 업무 전체, 즉, 엔지니어링(E, Engineering)과 자재구매(P, Procurement)도 살펴보면 좋겠다는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 이렇게 되면 결국 EPC 프로젝트 전체를 살펴보게 되는 것이 됩니다. 이미 엔지니어링 매니지먼트와 관련된 글을 써서 출간까지 하였으나, 이 책은 이 업계에 오랫동안 근무한 경험이 있는 분들을 대상으로 하는 내용이어서 처음 접하는 분들에게는 쉽게 다가오지 않을 수 있습니다. 그래서 플랜트 분야 취업하기 위해 준비 중인 대학생, 그리고 이 분야에 새로 진출하기 위해 관심을 두고 계신 분들이 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 글이 필요하다는 생각을 하였습니다. 그래서 Oil & Gas Plant, EPC 업무 중에서 가장 관심이 많은 엔지니어링(E, Engineering) 업무에 대해 중점적으로 소개하는 글을 쓰기로 하였습니다.

엔지니어링은 하나하나가 대학에서 전공으로 배우고도 오랜 실무 경험을 통해 실력을 쌓아야 하는 전문 분야입니다. 한 개인이 모든 것을 안다는 것은 불가능합니다. 그래서 이 분야에 익숙하지 않은 분이라도 Oil & Gas Plant, EPC 업무 중 엔지니어링 업무에 대한 개념을 잡을 수 있을 정도의 수준으로 글을 쓰고자 하였습니다. 다만, 이 분야에 새로 진출하는 분들에게 필요한 내용은 최대한 담을 수 있도록 노력하였습니다. EPC 업무는 무엇인지, 이 분야로 진출하기 위해서는 어떻게 준비하는 것이 좋을지 등에 대해 안내서로는 충분할 것입니다.
이 글에서 다루는 내용이 EPC 회사의 업무 절차(Process)에 따라 약간 다를 수는 있으나 대체로는 비슷하다는 것을 염두에 두고 읽으시면 도움이 되겠습니다. 이 분야에서 현업을 하는 분께는 아주 기초적인 내용이겠지만 다른 공종의 업무를 이해하는데 어느 정도 도움이 될 것으로 생각합니다.
엔지니어링(Engineering) 업무를 알아보기 위해서는 엔지니어링 업무를 구성하는 공종(Discipline)과 각 공종별로 각각의 주요 업무와 역할 위주로 설명하는 것이 가장 이해가 쉬울 것이라 생각하여 그렇게 구분하여 정리하였습니다. 이와 더불어 엔지니어링 업무의 일부이며 중요한 업무인 자재 구매(P, Procurement) 업무와 시공 및 시운전 그리고 프로젝트 마무리까지도 간략하게나마 함께 알아보도록 하겠습니다.
