Episode 1

A self-portrait of a salaryman in South Korea during the presidential election of 1992.

SUMMARY

I was a semiconductor engineer when the chairman of my company ran for the South Korean presidential election in 1992. The presidential election became a chance for me to think of the life of a salaryman. As I get used to daily company life  I saw myself getting insensitive to what I thought when I joined the company and realized that my future life would not be very different from the typical career path of my bosses as employees. I started wondering if I can live like the leader of my own life, even at work.

 Page 1

1. The 1992 presidential election was in the winter.

2. Kim Young-Sam was running for president.

3. Kim Dae-Jung was running for president.

4. And our company chairman Chung Ju-young was running for president as well.

 *Also known as Chairman KING

 5. That year, the election’s atmosphere was extremely intense.

6.  My company was in the grip of election fever. It also affected the life of all the employees in my company, including me.

I feel heat transmssion. What’s going on?

7. One day in the autumn that year, 1992.

All staffs in the Semiconductor Department have to work on Sunday.

  What?

 8. We all came to the office on Sunday.

Everyone gathers in the playground please!

Hey did you eat breakfast yet?

Screw breakfast, I just want to sleep.

 9. We were separated into 2 groups. One was sent to pick fruits in an orchard and the other went to work on the rice field.

Let’s go pick some fruits, guys.

So we're gonna harvest some rice to get farmers to vote for the  chairman KING?

10. I’ve been working on the farm for awhile.

11. Then some thoughts occurred to me.

I seriously do not know why I have to do this!

I did not apply to this company to cut rice!

 12.

I am doing  what I think is not right. Who am I?

Is this the life of salaryman?

 13. It was break time but there were two guys who was still working on the field.

Hey why don’t they take a break? Do you know them?

I heard they’re both Managers of the semiconductor assembly  department.

14.

What? Why do they have to work that hard?

I heard that the company removed their office desk and so, their  daily routine is cutting rice in the rice paddies.

 15. The story might be a rumor but it seemed true to me somehow.

I wonder what they think 10 years ago.

 16. Kim Young-sam won the Dec. 18 presidential election.

17. The heat of presidential elections in the company also cooled down rapidly the day after the election, with a placard reading "Strengthening company.

  Is the election over, right?

 18. I thought this was not right, when considering what the employees did for the election throughout the campaign.

Can't you say like this?  “Thank you for your effort. Unfortunately  I lost the election. Now let’s focus on our work.”

  What a naive thought...

 19. I was getting used to daily company life. One day when I walked to the cafeteria for lunch.

Hey you guys want to play poker tonight?

Nah, I might have to stay up late for work.

Mr. Kim, the yield is falling so we’re in trouble now. How could  we play poker?

20.  I kept walking and suddenly I was thinking about my appearance that moment.

21. I remember when I came to this company 2 years ago for a industry-university scholarship interview.

We are going to have an interview after lunch. So come back here  after lunch please.

  Please take your food stamp.

 22. The company was huge so I had to ask for directions to the cafeteria. There were about 12,000 staff working here.

Please keep walking straight on this main road to go to the  cafeteria.

  You are here

  Cafeteria

 23. On the way heading to the cafeteria, I witnessed an incredible scene.

First, thousands of people were walking towards the same place at the same time, steadily moving like a swarm of ants.

24. Second, people were walking with their face looking down.

Why don’t they walk with a straight head?

Working life here turns them into that?

25. The military-like appearance haunted my mind on the way back home. I thought even if I could work at this company later, I absolutely wouldn’t walk like them.

  Icheon - Seoul

 26. That’s two years ago. And I suddenly realized that I looked exactly the same way now.

27. Is that how I adapted to this working life? When did this appearance become perfectly normal to me?

  Sensitivity/ Years of employment

  That’s not true/ What’s the problem?

28. That moment I realized human is the creature of circumstances. It occured to me that I was no different from those people I saw 2 years ago. I came to think that the present appearance of my bosses  will not be very different from my appearance in the future.

  Team Leader/Manager/Director/Executive director/Vice president/President

If only I was 10 years younger.

 29. And I gave it a thought. Can I be the leader of my life and the captain of my soul at work?

I don’t think this is right

Just think that you don't have your soul

 30. I thought adapting to work meant killing myself little by little. So sometimes I have to compromise and do what it is not right. It was a big challenge for me - a free-spirited person. Such useless thoughts led to skepticism about the salaryman's life.
