《숲 · 어》 이야기
옛날, 원주민들은 브라질을 ‘핀도라마’, 즉 “야자나무의 땅”이라 불렀습니다.
이 울창한 숲속에는 수많은 나무와 동물, 그리고 사람들의 이야기가 바람을 타고 숲길을 따라 흘러 다녔습니다. 그 이야기들은 나뭇잎에 잠시 머물다 강물로 스며들어, 세상 곳곳으로 퍼져나갔지요.
숲이 간직한 이 오래된 이야기들을 이어받은 한 여자가 있었습니다.
어느 날, 그녀는 브라질 원주민 언어인 넹가투어를 쓰는 친구, 타케하라 조재를 만났습니다.
넹가투어는 “좋은 언어”라는 뜻으로, 브라질 고대 투피어가 세월을 거치며 변화하고 계승된 언어였어요.
조재가 들려준 이야기는 자연의 순환과 사람들의 삶이 엮인 신비로운 이야기였습니다.
이 언어는 숲의 나무들처럼 살아 숨 쉬고 고유한 지혜를 간직하고 있었죠.
그녀는 이 언어가 사라지지 않기를 바라며, 이야기들을 번역하고 새롭게 풀어내어 세상에 전하려 했습니다.
점차 그녀는 ‘이야기’ 그 자체에 대한 깊은 탐구에 빠져들었습니다.
시간과 공간을 넘나들며 여러 세대에 걸쳐 사람들과 함께 살아온 이야기의 본질에 대해 호기심을 가졌습니다. 그녀는 전승된 이야기의 흔적을 추적하며, 그 안에 담긴 의미를 시각적으로 표현하는 과정을 시도했습니다.
그녀의 전시 《숲 · 어》 속에 이 모든 ‘이야기하기’가 담겨 있답니다.
《Sup·er(Forest·Language)》stories
Long ago, the indigenous people of Brazil called their land "Pindorama", or "land of palm trees". In these dense forests, the stories of countless trees, animals and people drifted on the wind along the forest paths. They lingered on the leaves for a while, then seeped into the rivers and spread to every corner of the world.
There was a woman who inherited these ancient stories kept in the forest.
One day, she met a friend, José Takehara, who spoke Nengatu, an indigenous Brazilian language. Nengatu means 'good language', and it is a language that has changed and been passed down through the ages from Tupi, the ancient language of Brazil. The stories José told were mystical tales that intertwined the cycles of nature and human life.
Like the trees in the forest, the language lived and breathed and held its own wisdom.
Wishing for this language not to fade away, she sought to translate these stories and retell them in new ways to share them with the world.
Gradually, she became deeply immersed in exploring the essence of the 'story' itself.
She grew curious about the nature of stories that have lived alongside people for generations, transcending time and space. She began to trace the traces of these passed-down stories and attempted to visually express the meanings embedded within them.
All of this storytelling is captured within her exhibition, 《Sup·er(Forest·Language)》.
