1. 다윗의 아들 예루살렘 왕 전도자의 말이다.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2. 전도자가 말한다. 헛되고 헛되다. 헛되고 헛되다. 모든 것이 헛되다.
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all [is] vanity.
3. 사람이 세상에서 아무리 수고한들, 무슨 보람이 있는가?
What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
4. 한 세대가 가고, 또 한 세대가 오지만, 세상은 언제나 그대로다.
[One] generation passeth away, and [another] generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
5. 해는 여전히 뜨고, 또 여전히 져서, 제자리로 돌아가며, 거기에서 다시 떠오른다.
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
6. 바람은 남쪽으로 불다가, 북쪽으로 돌이키며 이리 돌고 저리 돌다가, 불던 곳으로 돌아간다.
The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
7. 모든 강물이 바다로 흘러가도, 바다는 넘치지 않는다. 강물은 나온 곳으로 되돌아가, 거기에서 다시 흘러내린다.
All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea [is] not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
8. 만물이 다 지쳐 있음을 사람이 말로 다 나타낼 수 없다. 눈은 보아도 만족하지 않으며 귀는 들어도 차지 않는다.
All things [are] full of labour; man cannot utter [it]: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9. 이미 있던 것이 훗날에 다시 있을 것이며, 이미 일어났던 일이 훗날에 다시 일어날 것이다. 이 세상에 새 것이란 없다.
The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which shall be done: and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun.
10. '보아라, 이것이 바로 새 것이다' 하고 말할 수 있는 것이 있는가? 그것은 이미 오래 전부터 있던 것, 우리보다 앞서 있던 것이다.
Is there [any] thing whereof it may be said, See, this [is] new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
11. 지나간 세대는 잊혀지고, 앞으로 올 세대도 그 다음 세대가 기억해 주지 않을 것이다.
[There is] no remembrance of former [things]; neither shall there be [any] remembrance of [things] that are to come with [those] that shall come after.
12. ○나 전도자는 예루살렘에서 왕이 되어 이스라엘을 다스리는 동안에,
I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13. 하늘 아래에서 되어지는 온갖 일을 살펴서 알아 내려고 지혜를 짜며 심혈을 기울였다. 괴로웠다. 하나님은 왜 사람을 이런 수고로운 일에다 얽어매어 꼼짝도 못하게 하시는 것인가?
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all [things] that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
14. 세상에서 벌어지는 온갖 일을 보니 그 모두가 헛되어 바람을 잡으려는 것과 같다.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.
15. 구부러진 것은 곧게 할 수 없고, 없는 것은 셀 수 없다.
[That which is] crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16. ○나는 장담하였다. "나는 지혜를 많이 쌓았다. 이전에 예루살렘에서 다스리던 어느 누구도, 지혜에 있어서는 나를 뛰어넘지 못할 것이다. 지혜와 지식을 쌓는 일에서, 나보다 더 많은 경험을 한 사람은 없다."
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all [they] that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
17. 나는 또, 무엇이 슬기롭고 똑똑한 것인지, 무엇이 얼빠지고 어리석은 것인지를 구별하려고 심혈을 기울였다. 그러나 그처럼 알려고 하는 그것 또한, 바람을 잡으려는 것과 같은 일임을 알게 되었다.
And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
18. 지혜가 많으면 번뇌도 많고, 아는 것이 많으면 걱정도 많더라.
For in much wisdom [is] much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
