수고도 헛되다

18. ○세상에서 내가 수고하여 이루어 놓은 모든 것을 내 뒤에 올 사람에게 물려줄 일을 생각하면, 억울하기 그지없다.
Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
19. 뒤에 올 그 사람이 슬기로운 사람일지, 어리석은 사람일지, 누가 안단 말인가? 그러면서도, 세상에서 내가 수고를 마다하지 않고 지혜를 다해서 이루어 놓은 모든 것을, 그에게 물려주어서 맡겨야 하다니, 이 수고도 헛되다.
And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise [man] or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This [is] also vanity.
20. 세상에서 애쓴 모든 수고를 생각해 보니, 내 마음에는 실망뿐이다.
Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.
21. 수고는 슬기롭고 똑똑하고 재능있는 사람이 하는데, 그가 받아야 할 몫을 아무 수고도 하지 않은 다른 사람이 차지하다니, 이 수고 또한 헛되고, 무엇인가 잘못된 것이다.
For there is a man whose labour [is] in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it [for] his portion. This also [is] vanity and a great evil.
22. 사람이 세상에서 온갖 수고를 마다하지 않고 속썩이지만, 무슨 보람이 있단 말인가?
For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?
23. 평생에 그가 하는 일이 괴로움과 슬픔뿐이고, 밤에도 그의 마음이 편히 쉬지 못하니, 이 수고 또한 헛된 일이다.
For all his days [are] sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.
24. 사람에게는 먹는 것과 마시는 것, 자기가 하는 수고에서 스스로 보람을 느끼는 것, 이보다 더 좋은 것은 없다. 알고 보니, 이것도 하나님이 주시는 것,
[There is] nothing better for a man, [than] that he should eat and drink, and [that] he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it [was] from the hand of God.
25. 그분께서 주시지 않고서야, 누가 먹을 수 있으며, 누가 즐길 수 있겠는가?
For who can eat, or who else can hasten [hereunto], more than I?
26. ○하나님이, 마음에 드는 사람에게는 슬기와 지식과 기쁨을 주시고, 눈 밖에 난 죄인에게는 모아서 쌓는 수고를 시켜서, 그 모은 재산을 하나님 마음에 드는 사람에게 주시니, 죄인의 수고도 헛되어서 바람을 잡으려는 것과 같다.
For [God] giveth to a man that [is] good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to [him that is] good before God. This also [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.
