# 7 Common Health Problems in Senior Cats

먼저 이 칼럼을 쓰기 시작하는 이유는, 생각보다 반려동물에 대한 건강상식이.. 네이 x, 다 x에 떠도는 지식들이  올드한 지식들이 너무 많고, 그런 지식들을 가져오는 보호자들과 이야기하다가 "답답하면 내가 뛴다."의 정신으로 그냥 번역이라도 하고, 쉽게 쉽게 설명하고 싶은 한 못난 수의사의 칼럽입니다.

 고양이들은 늙어도 잘 티가나지 않는데, 그래서 나이 든 고양이의 건강문제를 보호자들이 쉽게 캐치하기 쉽지 않다. 어떤 질환들은 나이가 듦에 있어서 피할 수 없는데, 그럼에도 몇몇 질환들의 경우에 수의사와 보호자의 헙력을 통해서 고양이를 더 편하게, 그리고 만족스럽게 할 수 있습니다. 밑에는 몇 가지 일반적인 건강문제를 이야기드립니다.

1. 관절염.

 고양이 전문 수의사에 연구에 따르면 12살의 고양이에 90% 정도가 방사선상에서 관절염에 가능성이 있어 보인다고 한다. 여러분의 고양이들이 더 이상 높이 오르거나, 가구들을 뛰어다니기를 멈추거나, 그루밍을 하기 힘들어하고, 화장실에 들어가기가 힘들어, 화장실 밖에서 오줌을 눈다면.. 관절염이 그 원인일 수 있다. 이러한 사인들을 확인한다면, 당신의 수의사와 함께, 어떻게 고양이의 통증을 줄여줄 수 있을지에 대해 이야기하는 것이 좋다.

2. 암

텍사스 A&M 수의대의 종양학 교수에 따르면, 10살 이상의 고양이 30%에서 어떤 형태의 암이 진단될 가능성이 있다고 한다. 고양이의 가장 흔한 암의 종류는 림포마이다. 상기 증상이 보인다면, 즉시 동물병원에 방문해야 한다 ; 식욕감소 혹은 의도치 않은 체중감소, 혹이나 둔부의 사이즈가 커지거나, 코, 항문, 입등에 출혈, 혹은 잘 낫지 않는 상처, 음식을 먹는 것을 힘들어하거나, 설명되지 않은 다리를 저는 행동이 낫지 않거나 혹은 숨쉬기 힘들어하거나 배변, 배뇨가 어려울 수 있다.

3. 치아질환

고양이가, 씹는데 문제가 있거나, 음식을 집은 후에 떨어트린다면, 매우 아픈 치주질환을 가지고 있을 수 있다. 치주질환은 나이 든 고양이의 아주 흔한 질병이다. 특히, 이를 닦이지 않거나, 스케일링을 정기적으로 하지 않는 고양이의 경우 플라크와 치석이 지속적으로 쌓이게 된다. 치아와 잇몸을 깨끗하게 하는 것이 고양이의 건강에 매우 중요하다.

4. 시력 이상

나이 든 고양이에서 백내장, 녹내장, 망막박리가 나타날 수 있다. 눈의 렌즈 부분이 뿌옇게 되거나 희게 변하는 것, 혹은 눈 전체가 뿌옇게 되는 것,  공이 확장되는 등의 문제들, 그리고 물건에 부딪히는 것을 관찰해야 한다. 

눈의 문제에 있어서, 경도나 그 종류에 따라, 약이 효과가 있을 수 있다. 백내장의 경우 수술로 제거될 수 있지만, 고양이들은 보통 후각을 이용하여 정보를 얻는데, 때문에 종종 수술이 불필요할 수도 있다. 여러 번 가구 배치를 바꾸는 것은 아이에게 혼동을 줄 수 있어서 추천되지 않는다.

5. 청력상실

고양이도 사람처럼 나이가 듦에 있어서, 청력이 나빠진다. 아직까지는 고양이용 청력 장치가 존재하지 않지만, 당신은 여전히 고양이와 소통할 수 있다. 손동작을 알려주거나, 진동을 통해서 소통할 수 있다.

6. 갑상선 기능 항진증

밥 잘 먹고, 활동적인 것이 아이의 컨디션이 좋아 보이는 것으로 느낄 수 있지만, 이것이 갑상선 기능 항진증의 사인일 수 있다.  갑상선 기능 항진증(줄여서 갑기항)은 갑상선 호르몬이 필요 이상으로 많이 생성되는 것을 뜻한다. 갑기항은 고혈압을 유발할 수 있는데, 이는 신부전이나 심장질환으로 이어질 수 있다. 만약에 고양이에게서 갑기항 증상이 나타나면 병원을 찾아, 혈액검사를 하고, 상담을 받아 치료에 대한 것을 논의해야 한다.

갑기항의 임상증상은 매우 다양한데, 식욕이 증가하고, 활동성이 증가하지만, 체중이 감소하며, 물을 많이 마시고, 오줌을 많이 누고, 예민해질 수 있어요. 그리고 구토나 설사 등을 동반할 수 있어요. 털이 떡지거나, 기름이 많아지는 것을 볼 수 있어요. 하지만 수의사인 입장에서 모든 임상증상이 다 나타나야 진단을 하는 것이 아니기에, 제가 나열한 것들 중 일부가 관찰되면 가까운 동물병원에 상담하시는 것이 좋다고 봅니다. 호르몬 질환은 빨리 발견할수록, 정확하게 진단할수록 그 대처가 빨라지고, 예후가 좋아요.

7. 신장질환

신장질환은 수의사가 노령묘에서 볼 수 있는 가장 흔한 질환 중 하나입니다. 정기적인 검진이 신장 문제를 빨리 찾아내고, 더 적절한 관리를 하게 할 수 있습니다. 신장은 한번 망가지면 돌릴 수 없지만, 많은 케이스에서 적절한 처방식과, 피하 수액 그리고 몇 가지의 약물 및 영양제들이 고양이의 수명을 연장시키는데 도움이 될 수 있습니다.

One of the blessings of cats is that age seems to creep up on them gently — so much so that it may be difficult for us to notice that they really are getting older and have developed some of the common health problems of old age. Though some conditions are inevitable with advancing age, there are ways that you and your veterinarian can work together to help your cat stay more comfortable and contented for as long as possible. Here are some of the most common health issues seen in senior cats, and how they can be addressed.

 Arthritis  

According to feline veterinary specialist Dr. Arnold Plotnick, studies have shown that 90 percent of cats over 12 years of age are likely to have radiographic signs of arthritis. If your cat no longer wants to go up or down stairs or jump on or off furniture, has difficulty grooming himself, pees outside the litterbox because it’s difficult for him to climb inside, or seems stiff after standing up, arthritis may be the reason. If you notice any of these signs, talk to your veterinarian about ways to help relieve your cat's pain.

 Cancer  

Thirty percent of all cats over age 10 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer, according to Dr. Heather Wilson, assistant professor of oncology at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. One of the most common types of cancer seen in cats is lymphosarcoma. Take your cat to the vet immediately if you notice any of these warning signs: appetite loss or unintentional weight loss; lumps or bumps that increase in size, sores that don’t heal, or bleeding or other discharge from the mouth, nose or anus; unusual body odor, lack of energy, difficulty eating or swallowing, unexplained lameness that doesn’t improve; or difficulty breathing, urinating or defecating.

Dental Disease  

Is your cat having trouble chewing — or picking up his food and then dropping it? He may have painful periodontal disease, a common problem in aging cats. Plaque and tartar can build up heavily over the years, especially if teeth aren’t brushed or professionally cleaned on a regular basis. Schedule a thorough cleaning, and then follow up by brushing your cat's teeth every day to help keep them clean. Keeping teeth and gums clean is an important part of maintaining your cat’s good health.

Failing Vision  

Cataracts, glaucoma and retinal detachment are among the eye conditions that can affect older cats. Look for signs such as cloudiness or whiteness of the lens, general cloudiness of the eye, dilated pupils or, of course, bumping into things. Medication can help, depending on the type and severity of the problem. Cataracts can be removed surgically, but cats typically get around so well using their sense of smell that it’s often not necessary. Just remember not to move the furniture around, or he might bonk his head.

Hearing Loss  

Even for cats, the sense of hearing begins to go with age; it’s just a fact of life. You can’t purchase hearing aids for your cat — yet — but you can still communicate with him. Teach hand signals, stomp your foot, so he feels the vibrations and knows you are nearby, or use the time-honored method of going to him to alert him that it’s dinnertime. He’ll appreciate it.

Hyperthyroidism  

Though it may seem like a good thing, an excessive appetite and increase in energy could be clues that your senior cat may have developed hyperthyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland produces far greater levels of thyroid hormone than necessary. Cats with hyperthyroidism are also prone to hypertension, which can contribute to kidney failure or heart disease if the condition goes untreated. If you suspect your cat may have developed hyperthyroidism, schedule a visit with your veterinarian for blood work and to discuss treatment options.

Kidney Disease  

Kidney failure is one of the most common problems veterinarians see in senior cats. Regular geriatric exams, starting early in your cat’s golden years, can increase the likelihood of early detection and proper management of any deteriorating kidney function. Though kidney failure isn’t reversible, in many cases, a therapeutic diet, subcutaneous fluid therapy, and sometimes medication and certain supplements can help to manage the condition and add months or years to your cat’s life.

노령성 질환들은 사람도 그렇겠지만, 보통 완치가 불가능하다고 이야기하죠. 그래서 이 미쿡수의사님도 결론적으로는 동물병원과 함께 "관리"하는 것, 예컨데, 통증을 줄여주는 것, 그리고 덜 불편하게 해주는 것에 대해 이야기해요. 저 역시 노령동물들을 많이 진료보면서 느끼는 것은, 보호자분들이 조금만 동물병원과 친하면 정말 아이가 편해질 수 있는 데, 라는 생각이에요. 이 미국수의사 할아버지 말처럼 노령성 질환들의 경우 빠른진단이 아이의 예후에 정말 중요한 역할을 합니다. 제가 동물병원에 근무하면서 느끼는 것은 수의사도 사람인지라, 자주 만나고, 많이 물어보고, 수의사의 고충을 공감해주는 보호자들을 좋아해요^^ 그러다보면 보호자님들도 더 많은 것들을 얻으시고, 반려고양이들도 더 나은 환경이 될 수 있지 않을까 하는 생각입니다.
