인간이 얼마나 이기적(selfish)일지라도, 인간 본성적인 원리가 분명히 있다. 그 원리는 인간이 타인의 행운에 관심을 가지게 만들고 필수적 행복을 만들어낸다. 비록 그것을 보는 즐거움을 제외하면 얻는 것은 없더라도. (역. 공감을 하면 실질적으로 얻는 게 없더라도 인간에게 필수적인 행복을 얻을 수 있다).
How selfish soover man are, there are evidently principles in human nature, which make him interested in forture of others, and produce happiness neccesary to them, though he gets nothing except the pleasure of seeing it.
How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it, except the pleasure of seeing it.
이런 종류의 것은 연민이나 동정심이다. 타인의 괴로움을 볼 때, 또는 생생한 방법들로 그런 마음을 품게될때 타인의 비참함을 우리가 느끼게되는 그런 감정이다.
