여러 나라에서 살다 보니, 환경이 우리에게 얼마나 큰 영향을 끼치는지 몸소 느낀다. 우리가 입는 옷, 하는 행동, 만나는 친구, 배우는 것들이 우리가 사는 장소를 바꾸는 것에 따라 많이 달라진다. 특히 문화는 우리에게 지대한 영향을 끼친다. 사람들이 여행을 좋아하는 이유는, 다른 문화가 있는 장소에 가는 것만으로도, 우리의 행동이 바뀌게 되기 때문이다. 그리고, 그런 새로운 문화 안에 있을 때, 나 자신에 대한 것들을 알아차리게 된다. 자기 자신에 대해 자신이 어떻게 느끼는지 생각해볼 수 있는 기회를 얻게 되는 것이다.
Living in several different countries, I am mesmerized by the fact that we change so much depending on where we live, what we wear, what we do, who we meet, and the things we learn. This is especially because of the culture of those places. As you interact with new places, an interesting gap is created. What was natural for you is not natural here. This gives us a chance to look inward. By looking at this gap closely, we can now actually know how we feel about ourselves.
나는 프랑스에 가서, 그들의 홈파티 문화를 통해 내가 요리를 아주 좋아한다는 것을 알아차리게 되었다. 대학생이었기 때문이었을까? 친구들과 돈을 모아 장을 보고 같이 소소하게 작은 집에서 시간을 보내는 것이 좋았기 때문이었다. 하지만 한국에 다시 돌아오자, 이런 나의 문화를 유지하기가 어려웠다. 그곳에서는 대학생이라는 이름과 여러 가지 요소들이 합해져 그것이 가능하였던 것이다. 그곳에서는 너무도 당연한 것들이 여기서는 그렇지 않았다. 마트들이 조금 다른 것뿐인데, 외식이 싸고, 배달 문화가 더 발달되었을 뿐인데. 그곳에서 당연했던 행동이 여기에서는 아니었다. 어떤 면에서 어떤 문화를 접한다는 것, 언어를 배운다는 것은, 나의 사고 회로를 다시 돌리고, 자연과 맞서 싸우는 일이 아닐까 생각해 본다.
When I was living in France, because of their home party culture, I realized that I loved cooking food. Maybe this was because of my title as a university student. I just loved going to buy glossaries with my friend and spending time in our little home cooking. However, in Korea, sustaining this culture was a bit hard. Everything natural there was not natural here. In Korea, the market was different. The foods they are selling were different. Here eating out wasn't that expensive, and delivery food was everywhere. Everything natural there wasn't that natural here. I needed to make my path from the scratch. In a way learning culture, and learning languages is rewiring our brain and going against nature.
자연을 맞서 싸우는 일이다 보니 어렵게 느껴질 수 있다. 또, 자연을 맞서 싸우는 것이 맞을까라고 생각이 들 수 도 있다. 자연은 아름답다, 그 자연스럽고 힘들이지 않은 간단함에서 우리는 전율을 느낀다. 하지만, 자연을 맞서 싸우는 일이 언제나 안 좋은 것은 아니다. 자연과 잘 어우러진 건축물처럼 아름다운 것은 없다. 그렇기 때문에 다른 나라의 문화도, 내가 있는 곳에 문화를 잘 살펴가며, 새롭게 고유의 문화를 만들 때 아름답고, 언어 또한, 나의 뿌리 경험을 잘 알아가면서 배우면 또 그렇게 재밌는 것이 없을 것이다. 모든 것은 연결돼 있다.
It was so hard, because I was going against nature. Again, I wondered if it's the right thing to do. Nature is beautiful, the simple natural beauty sweeps in and moves us so easily. But nature is also destructive and violent. It's not always bad to go against nature. Good architecture creating harmony with nature is the most beautiful thing in the world. So, it's most beautiful when we create our new culture carefully considering the nature around us. Also, It will be much more fun if we look at the root of our languages, and learn new languages based on it. Everything connects.
