John 10:22-42

Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims

22 Then came the Festival of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. 24 The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods” 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside— 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” 39 Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.

40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true.” 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.

How amazingly, Jesus is defending himself against the claims of blasphemy(신성모독), referring to the psalm 82. Jesus told the Israelites He is the son of God, with whom He is the one. Then, they were going to stone him as it was the Law of Moses, but they did not know that Jesus is the Messiah, whom they were looking forward for long, because they were not the sheep of Jesus. Therefore, they couldn't hear His voice and couldn't believe Him, even though they watched miraculous signs He had done.

At this verse, I was amazed that God called us as gods, all sons of the Most High(82:6), which is different from the gods or idols people say. But we all know nothing and understand nothing(82:5) and we walk in darkness, so we will die like mortals. Actually, we were immortal ones, like real gods. If we believe Jesus and restores the position as gods, we could live an eternal life as Jesus said, without seeing spiritual death.

I know nothing, I mean, I didn't read any book about it, but I am writing down what the Holy Spirit gives me through the insight or impression on the bible verses, so it could not be said it is 100% right, but I feel it strongly. I think that if the readers are one in God, you'll know what I am saying, but if not, you won't understand it. And I feel sorry about writing this meditation, and I will pray for you to understand it with the help of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Psalm(시편) 82

A psalm of Asaph.(아삽의 시편)

1 God presides in the great assembly; he renders judgment among the “gods”:

2 “How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked?

3 Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.

4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

5 “The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness;
    all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

6 “I said, ‘You are “gods”;  you are all sons of the Most High.
7 But you will die like mere mortals; you will fall like every other ruler.”

8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are your inheritance.
