34. 독사의 자식들아 너희는 악하니 어떻게 선한 말을 할 수 있느냐 이는 마음에 가득한 것을 입으로 말함이라
34. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
35. 선한 사람은 그 쌓은 선에서 선한 것을 내고 악한 사람은 그 쌓은 악에서 악한 것을 내느니라
35. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.
36. 내가 너희에게 이르노니 사람이 무슨 무익한 말을 하든지 심판날에 이에 대하여 심문을 받으리니
36. But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.
37. 네 말로 의롭다 함을 받고 네 말로 정죄함을 받으리라
37. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Jesus heard the words of the Pharisees and He knew their thoughts. Therefore, He was telling about the meaning and the importance of words that come out of mouths. In this case, words look very honest as it shows and tells what is in our minds, though people give flattering words to others.
However, the important message is that we are to be acquitted(forgiven) or condemned according to the words we have spoken. It could be the words of faith or unfaithfulness, or it could be bad words of condemnation or good ones of gratitude or praises, and so on.
Consciously or unconsciously, I talk a lot, in particular, to my family and close acquaintances, and then the words come very naturally and most of them are the same as I think and feel, most of them leading to serious or hurting dialogue, as they are too honest. I mean my natural thinking and feeling is not that trustworthy, so in case I spit them out without any filtering, it oftentimes makes troubles or arguing.
Then, what is good for me to do, being honest or dishonest? Seemingly, it is the problem of honesty, but I don't think so. It is the problem of our thoughts, the root of tree, which is the source of our words. If it is rooted down on Jesus, the words have possibilities of being good. If not, it would be totally the opposite.
In a nutshell, if my words are not good enough to comfort close ones, rather hurting them by condemning, it is time to check my thoughts, in particular, the root of it, going deeper to my faith of Jesus. Father, let me always control my words and at the same time let check my faith towards You and have the heart of Jesus, and be full of the Holy Spirit, so let me speak in Him only the words of encouragement, hope, and faith, making here and today the kingdom of God in present, amen.
