Who is my Father?
Judges 9:1-6
They gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels, who became his followers. He went to his father's home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerub-Baal.(Judges 9:4-5)
Abimelek, son of Jerub-Baal, killed 70 step-brothers on one stone in a day, hiring scoundrels with the money that was taken from the temple of Baal, the idol of fertility. I think that this scene shows the most terrible thing happened in the history of Israelites.
It was the biggest tragedy that occurred among brothers because they did not remember the LORD, their God, who rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side(8:34) from Egypt to the land of milk and honey, Canaan. Amimelek, the name itself, has the meaning of 'My father is King.' He considered his own father, Gideon, a king, who defeated enemies and had power to rule over the Israelites, and had given birth to 70 step-brothers. The tragedy started from the perspective of 'Who is my Father?' When the Israelites, including Abimelek, forgot it and worshiped other gods, the results were terrible, and it was a big tragedy itself.
Nowadays, I hear the news of these kinds of horrendous murder on a daily basis. I was wondering what causes these kinds of things to happen around my communities, and I think that I found the answer today. It was from the questioning about 'Who is my Father?' and knowing it and its presence is very important. Who is my father and a true King of kings that I follow and count on and that has the real power to rule over both the universe and me? He is my Father who was, is, and to come, and He is Alpha and Omega. That is my Father!
