Racism
From the long view on human history, it turns out that we come up with all kinds of reasons trying to put ourselves over other people.
Racism is a profound example of that, but obviously biologically there is no actual reality to it other than that we made this things up. We made it up and over time, because it manifests itself in many concrete ways. i.e. slavery, Jim Crow, subjugation, it becomes a social reality, and it ends up having very real impacts.
It is true that African Americans are on average poorer than other Americans. Well, it's not because of the race, but because of the social constructs over the course of three four hundred years that made them poor.
And so, what likes of John Lewis and Dr. King teach us is to ask ourselves, questions, if we see cruelty, inequality, or injustice. Why is that? Am I a part of this? Am I willing to do something about it? Are there sacrifices I'm willing to make to change it?
That is not always easy, but IT'S NECESSARY, and that's how progress is made. The key is in ordinary people deciding, you know what, THAT's not RIGHT! This is another cliche that I'm fond of invoking, that nothing right in the world ever occurs without at least some discomfort.
인류 역사를 장기적인 시각으로 볼때, 인간은 역사속에서 늘 자기 자신을 타인 위에 두기 위한 온갖 변명들을 만들어 왔음을 알게됩니다.
인종차별은 그 심각한 예로, 그저 우리가 만들어 낸 이론이라는 것 외에는, 생물학적으로 전혀 실제적인 증거가 전혀없습니다. 시간이 지날수록 우리는 여러 가지 구체적인 방식으로 그것을 더욱 실제화 시키며 그렇게 인종차별을 만.들.어.냈습니다. 즉, 노예 제도, 짐 크로우법, 강압적인 예속처럼, 그것은 더욱 사회적 현실이 되고 결국 사회에 매우 않좋은 실질적인 영향을 미치게 되었습니다.
아프리카계 미국인이, 다른 미국인보다 평균적으로 더 가난한 것은 사실입니다. 그것은 인종 때문이 아니라 3,400년 동안 그들을 가난하게 만든 사회적 구조 때문입니다.
따라서 John Lewis(존 루이스, 정치가겸 사회 운동가) 와 Dr. King(마틴 루터 킹)이 우리에게 가르치는 것은, 잔인함, 불평등 또는 불의를 본다면 스스로에게 질문하라는 것입니다. 왜? 나또한 이 잔인함, 불의 그리고 불평등에 참여하고 있는 것인가? 나는 이것에 대해 행동할 의향이 있는가? 그것을 바꾸기 위해 기꺼이 희생할 수 있는가?
그것이 항상 쉬운 것은 아니지만 반드시 필요한 일이며 이렇게 바로 변화와 발전이 이루어지는 것입니다. 중요한 것은 바로, 평범한 사람들이 결정하는 데 있습니다. 그건 옳지 않습니다!라고 말하는 것. 이것은 제가 좋아하는 진부한 표현중의 하나인데, 그것은, 세상의 어떤 일도 최소한의 불편함 없이는 일어나지 않는다는 것입니다.
