에밀리 브론테 <폭풍의 언덕> 원서
에밀리 브론테가 남긴 유일한 장편소설 <폭풍의 언덕: Wuthering Heights>에는 이후에 끊임없이 재현되는 오마주의 원형이 있다. 캐서린과 에드거, 캐서린과 히스클리프는 <가십걸>의 블레어와 네이트의 햇빛 우정, 블레어와 척의 핏빛 사랑에서 재현되고 캐서린 주니어의 사촌인 린튼과 헤어턴은 <리벤지>의 주인공 아만다(에밀리)가 이복자매 샬롯의 이부형제 대니얼과 결혼하는 막장드라마의 시나리오에서 재현된다. 에밀리 브론테는 호불호가 갈리는, 이해받기 힘든 인간의 심리와 그것으로 인한 파멸을 슬프도록 아름다운 언어로 노래했다.
최소한의 인물로 구성된 스토리텔링도 막장드라마 덕후에겐 충분히 몰입의 여지가 있었지만 시인이었던 에밀리의 언어 사용이 돋보이는 작품이다. 원서를 이해하는데 유용한 20세기 이디엄이 당연히 없고 아마도 거의 책으로만 언어를 수집했을 19세기 여성의 목소리는, 오래되고 고급스러운 영어로 변주곡을 들려준다. 번역서도 읽었었지만 이미 내용을 아는 이야기인데도 옛스러운 표현에 다소 혼란스럽다가 그녀의 언어 사용법에 익숙해질 무렵 또한번 영어 덕질의 보람을 느꼈다. 마침 길지 않은 고급영어 레퍼런스에 에드거 앨런 포가 한자리를 차지하고 있던 덕분에 에밀리의 음침한 감성과 운율을 조금이나마 즐길 수 있었다.
I rather think his appearance there was
distasteful to Catherine; she was not artful,
never played the coquette, and had
evidently an objection to her two friends
meeting at all: for when Heathcliff
expressed contempt of Linton, in his
presence, she could not half coincide,
as she did in his absence; and when
Linton evinced disgust and antipathy to

캐서린 주니어를 낳고 사망한 캐서린 시니어는 <폭풍의 언덕>을 발표하고 사망한 에밀리의 분신일까? 작가들의 생애가 그들의 작품만큼 전설이 된, 브론테 자매와 19세기 여성 작가들이 생각나서 숙연해진다. 영어 고전문학에 대한 애정만으로는 완주하기 어려웠지만 그럼에도 큰 울림을 남겼다.
