Americans living abroad enjoy a higher quality of life compared to the U.S. for the same income level, thanks to lower living costs (e.g., domestic help for cleaning, childcare, cooking, etc.).
In particular, U.S. medical expenses are more than 10 times higher than those abroad.
Furthermore, foreign income is not taxed by the U.S. but is paid to the country of residence, where taxes are lower than in the U.S.
It is estimated that there are 5.5 million Americans living abroad, a number that has surged since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
However, since overseas residents are not enrolled in U.S. pension plans, they require separate retirement planning.
