Brazil’s senate launched an inquiry into the government’s handling of the covid-19 pandemic. President Jair Bolsonaro was a vocal critic of lockdown measures, touted quack cures and bungled the vaccine roll-out. Brazil’s covid-19 death rate per 100,000 people is the third-highest in the world. The inquiry could provide months of embarrassing allegations, ahead of the next presidential election in October 2022.

Global bank losses from Archegos Capital Management, an investment firm which imploded last month, exceeded $10bn. Profits at UBS, a Swiss bank, were up by 14%, despite its losing $774m from its exposure to Archegos. Meanwhile, HSBC reported a net profit of $5.8bn in the first quarter of 2021, up by 79% from the same period a year ago, when the British bank’s profitable Asian business was damaged by the emergence of covid-19.

But under Switzerland’s system of direct democracy, opponents of the legislation have 100 days to gather the 50,000 signatures needed to trigger a referendum. The plebiscite will probably be held in September. A poll last year found 80% of Swiss support same-sex marriage.

Washington, DC’s police suffered a ransomware attack that compromised sensitive data on police informants. Babuk, a Russian-speaking hacker group, threatened to release the information if it is not contacted within three days. Earlier this month the group also targeted the Houston Rockets, a basketball team. But in that case the side’s security software prevented a full data breach.

The world’s largest package-delivery firm has benefited from a surge in demand for online purchases during covid-19 lockdowns. Its share price rose to a record high on the news. UPS is also benefiting from delivering covid-19 vaccines.

A new study in Nature Climate Change, a journal, finds that the world emits 5.5bn tonnes more carbon dioxide each year than countries’ emissions data report. That gap is equivalent to America’s annual emissions. It is caused by discrepancies between national and international models for reporting pollution. Some countries also overestimate how much carbon is absorbed by their forests.

BP reported stronger-than-expected first-quarter results thanks to improved demand for natural gas and higher oil prices. Underlying replacement-cost profit, BP’s preferred measure of earnings, rose from $791m in the first three months of 2020 to $2.6bn this year—$1bn more than analysts had expected. The British oil giant also said it would buy back $500m of its shares this quarter.
