Since Monday Israel has conducted strikes in Gaza, responding to Hamas and Islamic Jihad firing hundreds of rockets towards Israel. At least 65 Palestinians and six Israelis have been killed. A UN envoy warned that fighting between Israelis and Palestinians was “escalating towards a full-scale war”.

An independent panel set up by the World Health Organisation to review the global covid-19 response released a report criticising the world’s ill-preparedness for a “highly likely” event and countries’ early responses for lacking “urgency and effectiveness”. It offered reforms to mitigate the damage when similar circumstances next arise, saying that they could have prevented the covid-19 pandemic.

Hong Kong’s legislature, which has lacked any pro-democracy members since November, approved a bill that will let the authorities unseat district councillors deemed “unpatriotic”. The move brings the city’s legislation further in line with the national-security law imposed by the Chinese government last year, designed to crush any opposition to the Chinese Communist Party.

A French court ruled that Air France, an airline, and Airbus, an airplane-maker, must stand trial for involuntary manslaughter over a crash in 2009 that killed all 228 people on board flight AF447. The ruling overturns a previous decision in which judges said that the companies could not be blamed for what appeared to be technical failings and pilot errors.

America’s consumer price index rose by 0.8% in April compared with March. Annual inflation was up by 4.2%, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending September 2008. Although this fanned fears among investors, government officials including Janet Yellen, the treasury secretary, said they expect any price surges to be temporary, driven by supply bottlenecks among other factors.

BlackRock was given permission to operate in China. The world’s largest fund manager, which looks after nearly $9trn in assets, will own 50.1% of a joint venture with China Construction Bank and Temasek, Singapore’s state fund. In seeking new profits in China, BlackRock follows Amundi, a French money manager that in 2019 started a joint venture with AgBank and Bank of China.

Europe’s second-highest court annulled a ruling by the European Commission that would have stuck Amazon with a €250m ($303m) tax bill. The court said that the EU’s antitrust regulator had failed to make the case that the retail giant had gained illicit advantage from a tax arrangement in Luxembourg. In 2016 it overturned a similar order requiring that Apple pay Ireland €13bn.
