Republicans in America’s House of Represen tatives elected Elise Stefanik, a congresswoman from New York who is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, as conference chair—a powerful leadership position. Ms Stefanik replaces Liz Cheney, who was ousted from the role after criticising the former president for his “big lie” that last year’s presidential election result was fraudulent.

The International Criminal Court’s top prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, said she would press ahead with an inquiry into suspected war crimes committed by both sides.

Britain’s Serious Fraud Office launched an investigation into “suspected fraud, fraudulent trading and money laundering” at GFG Alliance, a steel-and-mining conglomerate run by Sanjeev Gupta that employs around 35,000 people. GFG has been struggling to raise funds since its main financier, Greensill Capital, collapsed in March.

Honda, Japan’s second-largest carmaker after Toyota, revealed that it had returned to profit in the quarter ending on March 31st. Honda’s bosses forecast profits of ¥660bn in the fiscal year ahead, less than analysts had expected, owing to semiconductor shortages and rising raw-material costs.
