Annual consumer-price inflation in Germany hit 3.8% in July, the highest since 1993. The rate is also well above the European Central Bank’s inflation target of 2% across the euro area. Germany’s Federal Statistics Office attributes the increase to the end of a temporary value-added tax cut earlier this year and rising energy prices.

7월 독일 소비자물가상승률은 3.8%로 1993년 이후 최고치를 기록했다. 유럽중앙은행(ECB) 목표인 2%를 훨씬 상회한다. 독일 당국은 연초 임시 부가가치세 인하와 에너지 가격 상승을 원인으로 꼽았다.

Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Qatar’s emir, approved an electoral law allowing the Middle Eastern country to hold its first legislative elections in October. The legislation, first approved in a constitutional referendum in 2003, will enable Qataris to elect two-thirds of the representatives who sit on the Shura Council, a consultative body. Though political parties are not permitted in Qatar, it does hold municipal elections.

카타르 군주가 10월에 첫 입법 선거 개최에 관한 선거법을 승인했다. 2003년 국민투표에 의해 결정된 이번 법을 통해 협의체 2/3를 선출한다. 카타르에서는 정당이 허용되지 않으나 지방 선거는 치른다.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will sign a decree next week to release thousands of inmates from Mexican federal prisons by mid-September. These will include victims of torture, over-75s jailed for non-serious crimes and those who have been incarcerated for ten years without a sentence, among others. Human-rights organisations have previously accused Mexico of using torture to obtain confessions.

멕시코 대통령이 9월 중순에 수천 명의 수감자를 석방하는 명령을 차주에 서명할 것이라고 밝혔다. 수감자 중에는 고문을 받거나 경범죄로 75년 이상 형을 살거나 유죄 판결 없이 10년 수감된 사례가 포함된다. 인권단체는 자백을 받기 위해 멕시코 당국이 고문행위를 했다고 주장했다.

Malaysia’s opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, filed a motion of no confidence in Muhyiddin Yassin, the prime minister, after accusing him of acting “against the constitution”. The king had criticised Mr Muhyiddin’s government for misleading parliament by announcing the end of a state of emergency without his prior approval. Mr Muhyiddin is facing growing calls from the opposition to stand down.

말레이시아 야당 인사는 총리가 위헌 행위를 했다며 불신임 투표를 제안했다. 말레이시아 왕은 현 총리가 자신의 사전 승인 없이 긴급명령 해지를 선포해 의회를 잘못된 방향으로 이끌었다고 비난햇다. 야당은 총리 사퇴를 요구하고 있다.

SoftBank plans to sell $2bn of Uber shares, which would cover half of the $4bn in losses it took on Didi. In 2019 the Japanese tech-investing group paid $11.8bn for 20.1% of the Chinese ride-hailing app. (America’s Uber owns another 12%.) SoftBank’s stake is now worth just $7.8bn, after China’s government turned on firms which listed on American stockmarkets.

SoftBank는 20억 달러 상당의 Uber 주식을 매각해 중국 차량공유기업 Didi로 인해 손실을 본 40억 달러 중 절반을 메꾸겠다고 밝혔다. SoftBank는 2019년에 118억 달러를 투자해 Didi 지분 20.1%를 획득했다. (미국 Uber가 12% 소유) 미국에 상장한 중국 기업에 대해 중국 당국 규제가 강화되면서 이제 SoftBank의 지분 가치는 현재 78억으로 떨어졌다.

Monsoon rains and landslides in Bangladesh destroyed homes in Cox’s Bazar, including thousands belonging to Rohingya refugees. Since 2017 at least 800,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled persecution in Myanmar to shelter in one of the most disaster-prone parts of Bangladesh. It has been raining for days and the monsoon lasts for months yet. At least 11 people were killed.

Sunisa Lee of America won the gymnastics all-around gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Simone Biles, the defending champion who withdrew from the event on mental-health grounds, watched from the stands as her 18-year-old compatriot, who was competing at the games for the first time, took the title.

도쿄올림픽 체조 부문에서 미국 국가대표 선수 리가 금메달을 획득했다. 바일리스 선수가 정신 건강을 이유로 기권하면서 올림픽에 처음으로 출전한 리가 금메달을 석권했다.
