President Joe Biden defended America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, saying that he “cannot and will not ask our troops to fight on endlessly in another country’s civil war”. He has been criticised for failing to foresee the rapidity with which the Taliban, which claimed Kabul on Sunday, would take the country. He blamed the Afghan government for lacking “the will to fight,” and vowed to send 6,000 troops back to the country to evacuate Americans and allies.

At least seven people reportedly died at Kabul airport as thousands jostled for space on departing flights. Some are believed to have fallen to their death after clinging to an aeroplane that was taking off. American troops—who took over the airport to evacuate American citizens, allied personnel and Afghans with “special immigrant visas”—fired shots in the air to scatter the crowd.

The tremor was stronger than the deadly quake that killed over 200,000 people in 2010. Complicating recovery efforts, Tropical Depression Grace was expected to batter parts of the country with rain, flash floods and mudslides.

Edgar Lungu conceded to Hakainde Hichilema in Zambia’s presidential election. Mr Hichilema won by 1m votes. It was his sixth run for office. He promises to clamp down on graft, negotiate an IMF bailout and woo foreign investors. There were fears that Mr Lungu would fix last week’s vote; instead it was he who called it “not free or fair”.

Road-safety regulators in America opened an investigation into Tesla after several of its cars crashed into emergency vehicles. Seventeen people have been injured and one killed in 11 crashes involving the carmaker’s partially automated driving systems since 2018. Most occurred after dark. The investigation will cover 765,000 cars sold by Tesla since 2014.

Economists blamed travel restrictions, floods and typhoons for the bad news. In recent weeks many have cut their forecasts for Chinese GDP growth this year as the Delta variant spreads around the country.

Malaysia’s prime minister, Muhyiddin Yassin, resigned after he admitted he had lost his parliamentary majority. He will remain as caretaker until a successor is appointed. To avoid scrutiny of his shaky coalition, Mr Muhyiddin passed a state of emergency in January and suspended parliament until July, earning a rebuke from the king, Sultan Abdullah. Squabbling among Mr Muhyiddin’s coalition and a worsening covid-19 epidemic further damaged his position.
