A federal judge approved Purdue Pharma’s bankruptcy plan, resolving a blizzard of lawsuits against the maker of OxyContin, an addictive painkiller. Members of the Sackler family, who own Purdue, will pay $4.5bn to plaintiffs and relinquish control of the firm. Controversially, the deal insulates the Sacklers from future litigation related to the opioid epidemic. Several states are expected to appeal.
