At least 40 people were reported dead along America’s east coast after Tropical Storm Ida caused severe flooding. The deluge trapped drivers in their cars and inundated neighbourhoods. Over 150,000 homes lost power in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. States of emergency remained in effect across the region on Thursday. The storm’s strength as it travelled north from the Gulf coast caught many by surprise. The rainfall broke records that had been set just 11 days prior by another tropical storm.

Thousands of protestors in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, demanded the resignation of Prayuth Chan-ocha, the prime minister who took power after a coup in 2014. Demonstrations gained renewed zeal this year as anger about the government’s handling of covid-19 increased: more than 11,000 people have died from the virus. The latest protest comes as Mr Prayuth faces a no-confidence debate in parliament.

American aviation regulators grounded Virgin Galactic’s fleet and opened a “mishap investigation” into the firm after learning that the rocket plane carrying its founder, Richard Branson, into space in July deviated from its course. The vehicle dropped below the altitude at which it was approved to fly for one minute and 41 seconds during its descent. Virgin Galactic had planned another flight in a few weeks.

Twenty-four hours later, a divided court gave the law the go-ahead. The legislation in effect bans all abortions after six weeks, with no concession for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. Under its broad terms, members of the public will be allowed to sue any party that aids a termination to take place. Mr Biden pledged to “protect and defend” women’s rights.

Singapore’s stock exchange became the first major bourse in Asia to allow special purpose acquisition companies to list. SPACS, formed strictly to raise capital, with no commercial operations, will be required to have a minimum market capitalisation of S$150m ($112m) to apply. The move is part of a campaign to attract more fast-growing companies to list in Singapore.

Without his support, President Joe Biden’s ambitious plan to expand the American social-safety net looks imperilled.

Western Union and MoneyGram, two financial firms, resumed money transfers to Afghanistan after receiving approval from America’s Treasury Department. Remittances to Afghanistan amounted to $789m last year, 4% of its GDP, but they were halted after the Taliban seized the country. Exemptions to sanctions for remittances and humanitarian aid should offer some relief to Afghans.
