Gavin Williamson, the education secretary, and Amanda Milling, co-chair of the Conservative party, were among those sacked.

Californian voters comfortably rejected a Republican-led referendum to oust Governor Gavin Newsom by a recall, of the kind that brought Arnold Schwarzenegger to the state capitol in 2003. Were Mr Newsom to have been recalled, Larry Elder, a conservative black radio host, would have held first place on the ballot to succeed him. Mr Elder has suggested he may run again next year when Mr Newsom is up for re-election.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, announced the formation of a new health agency to respond to future pandemics. In her annual State of the Union speech, she pledged to channel €50bn ($59bn) into better preparing the bloc’s resilience to cross-border health emergencies by 2027. The EU has faced criticism for its handling of the covid-19 pandemic.

Pope Francis offered a rebuke to American bishops who have called for President Joe Biden to be denied the Catholic rite of communion. The pope suggested that politics should be kept out of such decisions. Some conservative bishops have argued that Mr Biden, a practicing Catholic, should be refused the sacrament on the basis that his pro-choice views on abortion contradict the church.

The trial of Salih Mustafa, a former commander in the Albanian Kosovo Liberation Army, began in the Hague—the first case to come before an EU-backed court investigating atrocities during the Kosovo war. Some 13,000 people died in less than two years of conflict, beginning in 1998. Mr Mustafa pleaded not guilty to charges including murder, torture and arbitrary detention.

DoorDash filed a lawsuit against New York City, claiming that new legislation requiring more customer data to be shared with restaurants is unconstitutional and violates its users’ privacy. Delivery platforms and local governments are increasingly at odds. Last week DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats sued New York over a bill capping delivery fees. DoorDash and Grubhub are also suing San Francisco.
