North Korea’s state news agency said two ballistic missiles launched yesterday had been fired from a train by the regime’s new Railway Mobile Missile Regiment. The agency released pictures of the rockets being fired through the roof of a boxcar. Moving missiles by train could help to conceal them. The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the new threat.

France’s foreign minister said a new security pact between America, Britain and Australia is a “knife in the back”. AUKUS, as the partnership is known, rips up a previous deal that would have provided Australia with French submarines. China accused the three countries of showing an “outdated cold war zero-sum mentality”. The deal reflects shared concerns over China’s growing power in the Indo-Pacific.

Meanwhile China applied to join the CPTPP, a trade agreement that replaced the Trans-Pacific Partnership originally negotiated by President Barack Obama in 2016. The TPP was intended to limit China’s economic influence in the region. President Donald Trump withdrew America from the agreement in 2017 after Democrats and Republicans alike soured on the pact. China would need unanimous consent from all 11 members to join.
중국이 TPP를 대신하는 환태평양경제동반자협정(CPTPP)에 가입 신청했다. TPP는 2016년 당시 오바마 대통령이 협의했었다. TPP의 목적은 환태평양에서 중국의 경제력을 제한하는 것이었다. 양당 모두 TPP에 대해 부정적이자 트럼프 대통령은 2017년 TPP에서 탈퇴했다. CPTPP에 가입하려면 11개 회원국이 만장일치로 동의해야 한다.
America’s medicine regulator said that the covid-19 vaccines it has already approved are effective without booster shots, but that an extra jab could improve immunity. The Food and Drug Administration published a report analysing data submitted by Pfizer and BioNTech as part of the companies’ requests for their booster shot to be authorised. An advisory committee will decide whether to grant approval on Friday; President Joe Biden is in favour of boosters.

Taiwan proposed extra defence spending of $8.7bn over the next five years, including on new missiles. The defence ministry said that more arms were needed “in the face of severe threats” from neighbouring China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory. The United States, Taiwan’s closest ally, has been urging the country to spend more on its own defence.

Retail sales in America rose 0.7% in August; forecasters had predicted a decline. Shoppers splurged on furniture and building equipment but bought fewer cars because of shortages and higher prices. Consumers dined out less and shopped online more as the Delta variant fuelled covid-19 infections. Separately, 332,000 people filed for first-time unemployment benefits last week, up 20,000 on the week before.

More than 3,000 healthcare workers who had not been vaccinated against covid-19 were suspended in France, a day after the country’s vaccine mandate for health and care-home workers came into force. Olivier Véran, the health minister, said the majority of the suspensions are temporary but will help prevent a wave of infections in the autumn.
