Janet Yellen, America’s Treasury Secretary, told Congress that the federal government will run out of flexibility to pay its financial obligations on October 18th. Lawmakers risk a sovereign default unless they extend funding and suspend the “debt ceiling”—which the Senate failed to do on Monday. Ms Yellen and Jerome Powell, chairman of the Federal Reserve, pressed Congress to act when they testified on Tuesday.
미 재무장관은 10월 18일에 자금이 고갈돼 채무 여력이 사라질 것이라고 경고했다. 미 의회가 이번 월요일처럼 “부채한도”를 상향하지 않으면 국가 채무불이행(디폴트)이 발생할 것이라고 했다. 재무장관과 연준의장은 화요일에 의회가 행동에 나설 것을 촉구했다.
Testifying in the Senate, Mark Milley, America’s most senior military officer, defended two phone calls to his Chinese counterpart in which he promised that Donald Trump, then president, would not attack China. The conversations ignited controversy since they were made without Mr Trump’s sanction. General Milley said one call was directed by the defence secretary and that numerous other people were aware of the second.

Russia launched another case against Alexei Navalny, a jailed opposition leader. This time authorities are investigating him on suspicion of creating an “extremist group” with his allies. If convicted, they could face up to a decade in prison. On Monday the European Parliament nominated Mr Navalny for a human-rights prize, named after Andrei Sakharov, a Soviet dissident.

Singapore’s population shrank by 4.1% in June from a year earlier to 5.45m, the second consecutive annual drop. The number of non-residents, including foreign workers and students, fell by 10.7%. The citizen population shrank by 0.7% as the fertility rate fell to a record low of 1.1 births per woman, far below the replacement rate of 2.1.

Lego’s earning report showed that everything was awesome in the first half of the year. Revenues at the world’s largest toymaker rose by 43% year-on-year to DKr 23bn ($3.6bn) and earnings grew by 140% to DKr6.3bn, both setting new records. House-bound children with little to do during lockdowns caused sales to soar, though the company’s management instead attributed its success to their strategy.

Geely, a Chinese carmaker, announced that its founder had entered the highly competitive smartphone business. Eric Li’s new venture, Hubei Xingji Shidai Technology, will be headquartered in Wuhan and focus on “premium smart devices”, which share similar technology to vehicle cockpits. The move is part of Geely’s plan to integrate services and technology; it has also ventured into satellites and flying cars.
중국 자동차 제조업체 Geely 회장이 이미 경쟁이 치열한 스마트폰 사업에 진출했다고 발표했다. 회장은 Hubei Xingji Shidai Technology 라는 회사를 신설해 우한에 본부를 두고 자동차 주행 기술과 유사한 기술을 탑재한 “프리미엄 스마트폰”에 집중할 것이라고 했다. 이러한 변화는 서비스와 기술을 통합하려는 Geely 노력의 일환이다. Geely는 위성 및 비행자동차에도 이미 투자한 바 있다.
An energy shortage in north-eastern China intensified, prompting the governor of Jilin province to call for an urgent resupply of imported coal to keep thermal power plants running. Nine other provinces are experiencing shortages. Analysts at investment banks blamed emissions restrictions as well as high coal prices, advising that year-on-year growth of China’s industrial output in September may be hindered by 4% or more.
중국 북동부 지역에 전력난이 일어나자 지린성은 석탄화력발전소를 계속 가동하기 위해 석탄을 수입해 공급하도록 긴급 요청했다. 다른 9개 성에서도 전력이 부족한 상황이다. 투자은행 애널리스트는 높은 석탄 가격과 탄소배출제한을 원인으로 꼽으며 중국 산업생산량이 9월 기준 전년대비 4% 이상 감소할 것이라고 경고했다.
