But lawmakers have yet to raise the “debt ceiling”, without which the country risks a sovereign default on October 18th. Meanwhile, Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, whose vote Democrats need to expand the social-safety net, said he would support no more than $1.5trn in spending—less than half their desired amount.

Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s former president, said he would appeal against a conviction and one-year sentence for exceeding electoral spending limits during his failed re-election campaign in 2012. Regardless of the outcome he will probably evade jail. A judge said Mr Sarkozy could serve his sentence under house arrest. He was found guilty in a separate corruption case in March.

Stockmarkets in America sank on Thursday, capping a volatile month as investors weighed the likelihood of continued supply-chain disruptions, higher inflation, a default by Evergrande and tapering by the Federal Reserve. The S&P 500 closed down more than 4% in September, its first monthly decline since January and its worst performance in over a year. Still, the index was up by about 16% year-to-date.

A judge in Britain sentenced Wayne Couzens to life in prison for kidnapping, raping and murdering Sarah Everard. The case has triggered outrage at the London Metropolitan Police, in which he was serving as a police officer at the time, and the treatment of women in Britain. On Wednesday the court heard that Mr Couzens abducted Ms Everard in March under the guise of arresting her.

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits last week rose by 11,000 from the week before, to 362,000—a third consecutive increase. That is a significant improvement from the height of the pandemic but still well above the weekly average in 2019, of 218,000.

Its purchasing managers’ index fell to 49.6; analysts had not expected it to cross the 50-point threshold that separates expansion from contraction. Power shortages and sporadic outbreaks of covid-19 are risking China’s growth outlook. So is Evergrande’s debt crisis. The property giant missed another repayment on Wednesday.

Europe’s retail industry is the latest to be disrupted by supply-chain snafus. H&M, a fashion chain, said sales growth decelerated in September as global delays meant it could not keep up with demand. Boohoo, an online fast-fashion firm, warned that higher freight and labour costs would dent its full year profit margins. But Diageo, a beverage company, expects a boost as bars and restaurants reopen.
