At least five people were killed and dozens wounded in Beirut after a protest organised by Hizbullah, the militant Shia group, was attacked by unknown assailants. Snipers on rooftops reportedly targeted Hizbullah’s supporters. The protesters were demanding the removal of the judge overseeing the inquiry into last year’s port explosion, whom Hizbullah accuses of singling out its allies. Lebanon’s prime minister, Najib Mikati, called for calm.

An advisory panel at America’s Food and Drug Administration unanimously recommended booster shots of the Moderna covid-19 vaccine for certain groups. Eligible Americans would include adults over the age of 65 and people at risk because of their jobs or health who received their second jab at least six months earlier. Regulators usually follow the panel’s recommendations, as they did in September when the FDA endorsed boosters of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine under the same conditions.

Last week 293,000 Americans filed for initial unemployment benefits, down 36,000 from the week before and well below expectations. It was the lowest number since March 2020. About 3.6m people are receiving benefits across all government programmes, down from 12m in August, before the supplementary pandemic aid expired.

LinkedIn, a professional-networking website, said it would shut its Chinese version, citing a “challenging operating environment”. For years LinkedIn has been the only major American social-networking platform not blocked in China, because it complied with censorship requests. In March China’s internet regulator told the company to tighten its content regulation, leading to the profiles of several human-rights activists being blocked in China.

More than 10,000 workers at 14 Deere & Co plants in America went on strike Thursday. Deere, a manufacturer known for its green-and-gold farm equipment, and representatives from the United Auto Workers union will likely return to in-person bargaining next week. Around 1,400 workers at Kellogg’s, a cereal maker, are also on strike; another strike at Mondelez, a food maker, recently ended; and a union representing film and television production crews authorised a strike earlier this week.

Kishida Fumio, Japan’s prime minister, dissolved the lower house of parliament ahead of a general election on October 31st. On the campaign trail Mr Kishida hopes to benefit from some recent modest success tackling the covid-19 pandemic. He was appointed prime minister on October 4th after replacing his unpopular predecessor, Suga Yoshihide, as head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
일본 총리는 10월 31일 총선에 앞서 하원을 해산했다. 일본 총리는 최근 나름 성공적인 코로나 대처로 총선 결과에 희망을 걸고 있다. 현 총리는 지난 10월 초에 지지도가 낮았던 전 총리와 교체됐다.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s president, sacked three members of the central bank’s monetary-policy committee, sending the lira to record lows against the dollar. One was the only official to vote against a rate cut last month. A fan of low interest rates despite soaring inflation, Mr Erdogan has fired three central-bank governors in about two years.
