Police arrested a man and recovered a knife; the motives of the attacker are so far unknown. The death of the senior Conservative politician shocked his fellow parliamentarians. This was the latest in a series of such knife attacks on British MPs in recent years. Jo Cox, a Labour MP, was similarly murdered in 2016.

A week ago a suicide attack by ISKP left nearly 50 people dead in the northern city of Kunduz.

Capping a stellar third quarter on Wall Street, Goldman Sachs reported revenues of $13.6bn, up by 26% year-on-year and well above forecasts. The recent surge in corporate dealmaking and stockmarket flotations was a boon for the firm. The investment-banking division raked in $3.7bn in fees, the second-best quarter on record and 88% higher compared with the same period last year.

Toyota, Japan’s biggest carmaker, cut its planned global output for November by around 15%, blaming the worldwide shortage of microchips. The company had previously cut production targets in September and October due to a shortage of components. Nonetheless, it still hopes to make its target of 9m vehicles for the year ending March 31st 2022.

Lebanon declared Friday to be a day of mourning, after at least six people were killed and dozens wounded during a protest organised by Hizbullah, a militant Shia group. Unknown assailants, reportedly firing from rooftops, attacked the gathering in Beirut. The protesters were demanding the removal of the judge overseeing the inquiry into last year’s port explosion, whom Hizbullah accuses of singling out its allies.

Retail sales in America rose by 0.7% in September from the previous month; forecasters had predicted a drop of 0.2%. The better-than-expected figure partly reflects the dearer cost of goods. Spending on cars and auto parts jumped even as car unit sales fell, a sign of higher prices amid supply shortages. Overall, retail sales are up by 19% from their pre-pandemic level.
