Sudanese soldiers reportedly fired live ammunition at protesters demonstrating against an ongoing coup by the armed forces. Earlier General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan declared a state of emergency and dissolved the transitional administration that he had led. It was supposed to shepherd the country towards democracy following the ousting of Omar al-Bashir, Sudan’s long-time dictator, in 2019. Reports suggest several government ministers, including Abdalla Hamdok, the prime minister, and pro-democracy leaders have been arrested by the army.

More than a dozen news organisations published stories on redacted internal Facebook documents provided to America’s Congress, which were leaked by Frances Haugen, an employee-turned-whistleblower. The trove of research, emails, memos and presentations covers issues including Facebook’s approach to hate speech and misinformation, its role in the Capitol insurrection on January 6th and the impact of its “Like” and “Share” buttons, as well as the company losing its appeal among teenagers and young adults.

Greenhouse-gas concentrations reached a record high last year and increased faster than the annual average growth rate over the past decade, the UN’s weather agency said. The drop in emissions last year during covid-19 lockdowns had no “discernible impact” on the level of heat-trapping CO2, methane and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere.

Proceeds will benefit The Economist Education Foundation, an independent charity that teaches young people to analyse current affairs.

Hertz ordered 100,000 Tesla Model 3s in a bid to power up its electric offerings. The car-rental company ordered its first battery-powered vehicles in 2011, and one fifth of its fleet will need to be charged, rather than refuelled, when this order is completed in 2022. Tesla’s market capitalisation briefly surpassed $1trn after the announcement.

With winter around the corner, the UN warned that Afghanistan’s food crisis could lead to millions starving. It said that almost 23m people—more than half the population—are facing acute food insecurity. The executive director of the UN’s World Food Programme, David Beasley, said that Afghanistan is now “among the world's worst humanitarian crises, if not the worst”.

Envision, the Chinese firm behind Britain’s first “gigafactory” will significantly increase its annual capacity from 1.7 to 38 gigawatt hours. The Sunderland facility currently makes batteries for the Nissan Leaf, an electric car. The expansion, for which production is set to start in 2024, is in partnership with Nissan UK and will be completely powered by renewable energy.

The Turkish lira fell further on Monday in early Asian trading, hitting 9.85 against the dollar. On Saturday President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared ten ambassadors, including those from America, France and Germany, “personae non gratae”. Mr Erdogan’s opponents said it was an attempt to distract the public from the county’s economic woes. Last week the lira hit a record low after Turkey’s central bank cut its policy rate.
