Ahead of COP26, a UN climate summit that starts on Sunday, the UN Environment Programme said that under current national climate pledges, the world is on track for a global-temperature rise of 2.7°C this century. That is well above the Paris climate agreement goal of below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. Net-zero emissions pledges could limit warming, but current commitments do not set big emitters on a clear path to achieve this.

At least ten people have been killed in the protests that have rocked Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, since a coup toppled the transitional government on Monday. General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, the military chief who led the putsch, claimed that civilian legislators had tried to incite a rebellion against the armed forces, and would face trial. Abdalla Hamdok, the prime minister, is under house arrest.

Police in nine countries arrested 150 people on suspicion of buying or selling contraband online, in perhaps the largest sting targeting the dark web. Known as Dark HunTOR and coordinated by Europol, the operation seized $31m in cash and digital currencies, 234 kilograms of drugs and 45 firearms. Of the arrests, 65 were in America, 47 in Germany and 24 in Britain.

A cyberattack in Iran crippled the country’s network of petrol stations, leaving queues of angry drivers unable to refuel their cars. The attack targeted the government-issued cards that many Iranians use to buy subsidised fuel. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but it appeared to be a challenge to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

ABP, the biggest pension fund in the Netherlands, announced it will stop investing in producers of fossil fuels. Its decision comes after recent climate reports from the International Energy Agency and the UN Climate Panel. Most of its investments, more than €15bn ($17.4bn) or 3% of ABP’s total assets, will be sold by the first quarter of 2023.

Komuro Mako, the niece of Japan’s emperor, married Komuro Kei, a commoner, thus renouncing her royal title. The former princess declined the $1.3m payment normally given to women who leave the imperial family and eschewed the fanfare of a royal wedding. The couple’s engagement had been dogged by media scrutiny of Mr Komuro’s financial situation; Ms Komuro was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder this year.
