China’s State Council announced new targets for cleaner air and water on Sunday, but warned it would be difficult to ensure that carbon emissions peak in 2030 and China is carbon neutral by 2060, as promised by President Xi Jinping. The Council said that China, the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, has “a long way to go” on environmental protection.

Tens of thousands of Ethiopians rallied in support of the country’s military in Addis Ababa, the capital, as Tigrayan and Oromo rebels drew closer to the city. On Saturday nine opposition groups announced a coalition to oust Abiy Ahmed, the prime minister, politically or by force. They have been locked in a year-long conflict with Ethiopia’s government. More than 2.1m residents of the Tigray region have been displaced.

No one claimed responsibility but trouble has been brewing in Iraq since a disputed election last month, which pro-Iran shia groups claim was rigged. America condemned the “apparent act of terrorism”.

He promised to abide by the result; by a 58-42 margin, his followers said he should sell. Mr Musk, an increasingly vocal critic of Democrats’ plans to raise taxes on high earners, could benefit from selling now: capital-gains rates may soon rise.

A federal appeals court in America temporarily blocked President Joe Biden’s mandate that employees at large private firms be vaccinated against covid-19 by January 4th or submit to weekly testing. The conservative-dominated court, based in New Orleans, said the requirement raises “grave statutory and constitutional issues.” On Friday eleven Republican-led states had sued to halt the mandate. The White House has until Monday to respond.

China’s exports remained steady in October, despite power shortages and new covid-19 outbreaks in the country. Its exports were worth $300bn, up by 27.1% year-on-year, but slightly down on September’s increase of 28.1%. Last year’s tallies were depressed by the pandemic. With China’s overall economic growth slowing, the figures will provide at least some comfort.

Net income at Berkshire Hathaway fell by two-thirds, to $10.3bn, in the third quarter of 2021, compared with the same period last year. However, operating income at Warren Buffett’s conglomerate, a measure which strips out movements in its share portfolio and which Mr Buffett prefers, rose by 18%, to $6.5bn. It was helped by investments in rebounding energy and railroad firms.
