As the migrant crisis at the Belarus-Poland border continues, Alexander Lukashenko threatened to cut off natural gas supplies from Russia to Europe. The Belarusian dictator’s warning came in response to news that the EU is considering imposing further sanctions on his regime. Despite Mr Lukashenko’s bluster, he needs cooperation from Gazprom, the pipeline’s owner—and by extension the Russian government—to follow through.

F.W. de Klerk, the last president of segregated South Africa, died at the age of 85. Together with Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader whom he released from prison in 1990, de Klerk oversaw the transition to constitutional democracy, culminating in the first multi-party elections in 1994. Subsequently, De Klerk and Mandela were jointly awarded the Nobel peace prize.

The current chair and former chief executive of Swedish oil company Lundin Energy were charged with complicity in war crimes in Sudan. Swedish prosecutors allege the company asked the government to secure an oil field, knowing that this would necessitate attacks on civilians by the army. It is the first such case brought against businessmen since the Nuremberg trials. Both executives and the company deny the charges.

With the country’s current president all but certain to secure a third term, the proclamation will help Mr Xi cement his cult status.

Sara Duterte, the daughter of Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte changed her party allegiance to Lakas-CMD, stoking speculation that she plans to continue her father’s legacy. The party previously denied its current candidates for next year’s presidential elections were “placeholders” for Ms Duterte, but the decision to join Lakas just days before a deadline to swap someone new in has raised eyebrows.

Hong Kong’s national security law claimed another victim as a man was sentenced to almost six years in prison for chanting a banned protest slogan. Ma Chun-man, known as “Captain America” for the costume he wore while on demonstrations, pleaded not guilty to violating the law, which was imposed at the behest of the mainland government to curb free speech in the city.
홍콩국가보안법에 따라 또 한 명이 금지된 문구를 시위에서 외친 혐의로 징역 6년형을 선고받았다. 당시 “캡틴 아메리카” 의상을 입었던 이 시위자는 홍콩 언론의 자유를 제한하기 위해 도입된 보안법을 위반하지 않았다며 무죄를 주장했다.
The Czech government led by Prime Minister Andrej Babis resigned, paving the way for a new centre-right coalition government. It will be made up of two parties, bound by a power-sharing agreement, that narrowly won the most seats in parliamentary polls in October. Petr Fiala, the leader of the strongest party in the coalition, is likely to be the next prime minister.
