Contradictory views on inflation emerged from the euro zone’s most important central bankers. Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, said that inflation in the region, running at 4.1%, will “fade”, so monetary policy need not be tightened. But Jens Weidmann, head of Germany’s Bundesbank, argued that inflation was likely to stay high for longer, and urged an end to “expansionary” monetary policy.
