Politicians from the governing bloc of the departing chancellor, Angela Merkel, argued that Germany should follow Austria in introducing compulsory vaccinations in the face of soaring rates of covid-19 infection. The country’s vaccination rate of 68% is relatively low compared with other countries in western Europe. Their comments came after protests in several European cities against new lockdowns and other covid-19 restrictions. There were violent disturbances in The Hague and other Dutch cities.

Abdalla Hamdok, the prime minister of Sudan who was ousted in a military coup last month and arrested, was freed and restored to office. He signed a power-sharing agreement with the leader of the coup, Lieutenant-General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan. But some of those who have been leading the protests against the coup denounced the deal. They demand the complete withdrawal of the armed forces from politics.

Poland accused Belarus of continuing to send migrants to its borders, despite clearing camps close to the border earlier in the week. The Polish prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, toured the Baltic states on Sunday, two of which share a border with Belarus. He said that Belarus’s actions constituted the “greatest attempt to destabilise Europe” since the Cold War.

The board of TIM (formerly Telecom Italia) was reportedly considering a takeover bid by KKR, an American private-equity firm which already owns 37.5% of its “last-mile” network. Vivendi, a French conglomerate that is TIM’s biggest shareholder, has been at loggerheads with its chief executive. The shares have slid by a quarter since June. Third-quarter revenue and profit fell, year-on-year. S&P downgraded TIM’s debt on Friday.

Venezuelans went to the polls on Sunday to elect over 3,000 state governors, mayors and city councillors. Opposition politicians are competing for the first time in four years, having boycotted previous elections because of rigging by the government of President Nicolás Maduro. In May, however, two opponents of the government were included among the five directors of the electoral commission.

A gunman, confirmed by Hamas to be a member of the Palestinian militant organisation, shot dead one person and wounded four, including two police officers, in Jerusalem’s Old City. The gunman was killed by Israeli security personnel. The attack was the second in the area in recent days: on Wednesday a 16-year-old stabbed two police officers before being shot dead.

Chinese state media published videos of Peng Shuai, a tennis player who had not been seen since early this month, when she accused a former deputy prime minister of sexual assault. They show Ms Peng at a restaurant and at a youth tennis match in Beijing, purportedly this weekend. But the head of the sport’s global organising body said he was not convinced that she was acting freely.
