The Federal Reserve said it will accelerate its “tapering”—the reduction of monthly bond purchases—in order to wind down economic stimulus and contain runaway inflation. The central bank is reducing its asset buys by $15bn a month; starting in January that will be $30bn a month, meaning that tapering will be complete by March. Most Fed policymakers said they were prepared to raise interest rates three times next year.

Lithuania’s last remaining diplomats left China, as relations between the two countries continue to sour. Lithuania’s ambassador was recalled in September, after China reacted furiously to Lithuania’s decision to host a diplomatic office from Taiwan under the island’s own name. The latest recall was reportedly a response to an attempt to lower the Lithuanians’ diplomatic status, potentially jeopardising their diplomatic immunity.

Meanwhile Mr Putin is also facing pressure from the West over Russia’s increased military presence on the border with Ukraine.

Germany will expel two Russian diplomats over the murder in 2019 of a former Georgian soldier who had been living in Berlin. A German court sentenced Vadim Krasikov, a Russian agent, to life imprisonment for the assassination, which it said the Kremlin had ordered. A spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign ministry promised retaliation over the expulsions.

America’s Commerce Department said retail sales rose by just 0.3% in November from the previous month. The modest growth could be a result of surging sales in October as Americans began their holiday shopping early in anticipation of shortages. But it could also point to a higher degree of caution among consumers amid the fastest inflation in decades.

A report by Oceana, a marine conservation group, claimed plastic packaging waste by Amazon increased by almost 30% last year. The group analysed packaging data from the e-commerce giant and found that it generated 599m lb (272m kg) of the waste in 2020, up from Oceana’s estimate of 465m lb in 2019. Amazon rejected the claims.

Inflation in Britain surged to 5.1% in November, its highest rate in more than a decade. The consumer-price index was propelled upwards by soaring energy costs. But prices also rose across the board; core CPI, which excludes energy and food prices, hit its fastest pace in nearly 30 years. The Bank of England meets on Thursday to decide whether to tighten monetary policy.
