Moon Jae-in, South Korea’s president, granted a pardon to his predecessor, Park Geun-hye, who was in prison for corruption. Mr Moon had previously pledged not to pardon those convicted of graft, but supporters of the conservative opposition party had been calling for Ms Park’s release, citing her poor health. Mr Moon’s party is preparing for a presidential election in March.

More than 3,000 flights were cancelled on Friday and Saturday as a wave of covid-19 infections, fuelled by the Omicron variant, led to staff shortages for airlines around the world. Early data suggest that Omicron is less severe than other variants, but its rapid spread has prompted several countries to reimpose restrictions: Germany will ban gatherings of more than ten people and close nightclubs from December 28th. Omicron now accounts for nearly 15% of covid cases in Britain and 4% of cases in America.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration said that it would lift travel restrictions imposed last month on eight African countries over concerns about the spread of Omicron. Foreign nationals who have been in Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa or Zimbabwe in the 14 days before they intend to travel to America will be allowed to board America-bound flights from December 31st.

Myanmar’s armed forces conducted air raids on a rebel-held area, sending hundreds fleeing into Thailand. Renewed fighting broke out between Myanmar’s government and the Karen National Union, representing one of the country's many ethnic insurgencies. The KNU’s long-running rebellion against Myanmar’s government was reignited by the coup staged in February against the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.

China’s securities regulator, the CSRC, published draft rules for Chinese companies listing on overseas stockmarkets, extending the CSRC’s oversight to companies using a structure known as a “variable-interest entity”. This mechanism has been used by big Chinese companies listing overseas to skirt rules limiting foreign investment in some sensitive industries. VIEs are not to be banned but will be brought under the CSRC’s authority.

Selfridges, a British chain of luxury department stores, is being sold to a Thai-Austrian alliance for £4bn ($5.4bn). The new owners, a Thai retailer and an Austrian property company, will take over 18 of the group’s 25 stores; the remaining outlets will stay under the ownership of the current Canadian owners. Selfridges Group employs around 10,000 people.
영국 럭셔리 백화점 브랜드인 Selfridges가 태국-오스트리아 합작회사에 54억 달러로 매각됐다. 태국 유통 기업과 오스트리아 부동산 기업의 합작회사는 25개의 Selfridges 백화점 중 18개를 인수한다. 나머지 백화점은 캐나다 소유주가 계속 보유한다. Selfridges Group 직원은 약 1만명이다.
