A South Korean crossed the border with North Korea in a rare defection to the isolated dictatorship. Tens of thousands of North Koreans have fled their country’s repressive regime since the 1950s but defections in the other direction are extremely uncommon. South Korea’s armed forces confirmed that someone crossed the fortified border on Saturday evening, but could not confirm whether the person was alive.

The world marked the arrival of 2022 with subdued celebrations. In Auckland, New Zealand, groups were allowed to gather for the first time since August. In Australia, officials in Sydney allowed its fireworks display to go ahead. But many governments have toned down celebrations amid concerns that crowds will spread covid-19. In America, officials said only 15,000 people could gather in Times Square, New York—one quarter of the pre-pandemic cap.

Deaths from covid-19 in eastern Europe (including Russia) passed 1m according to a tally produced by Reuters news agency. However data collected by The Economist suggests the pandemic death toll is probably much higher. The region has seen more than 1.6m “excess deaths” (those that exceed the average number in a given country prior to the pandemic). Russia alone has suffered more than 1m such excess deaths since April 2020; it has officially recorded fewer than 270,000 covid-19 deaths.

Colorado’s governor, Jared Polis, declared a state of emergency as wildfires swept through Boulder county, a largely suburban area north of Denver, the state capital. At least 33,000 people have fled and hundreds of homes have been destroyed. The fires are thought to have begun when strong winds toppled power lines; that wind is now fanning the flames. A prolonged drought in the region has helped to create conditions conducive to fires.

Huawei, a Chinese telecoms manufacturer, reported that its revenues fell by almost 30% in 2021, compared with the year before, as American sanctions dampened the firm’s smartphone sales. That is an improvement on the third quarter, when its revenues were down by 38% year-on-year. Donald Trump, the former American president, imposed export controls on Huawei in 2019, citing security concerns because of the company’s links to China’s government.

President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, exchanged warnings over the crisis in Ukraine during a phone call on Thursday. Mr Biden threatened “serious costs and consequences” if Russia did not de-escalate tensions with Ukraine. In return, Mr Putin warned America that imposing sanctions would be a “colossal mistake” that could rupture ties between the two countries.

The South African government said the country’s latest covid-19 wave, driven by the Omicron variant, had subsided and it would be easing restrictions. In America, daily covid cases soared to a record high but the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said that relatively few people are being hospitalised or dying as a result of Omicron.
