A German court convicted a Syrian ex-army officer of crimes against humanity, sentencing him to life in prison. Anwar Raslan, who had claimed asylum in Germany, was arrested in 2019 and charged with torturing 4,000 people, murdering 58, as well as rape and sexual assault while he worked as a high-ranking security service officer at Al-Khatib prison in Syria between 2011 and 2012. His trial represents the world’s first criminal case brought against state-led torture in Syria.
