North Korea fired off two suspected short-range ballistic missiles, its fourth weapons test of 2022. The North Korean government claims that two previous tests involved hypersonic missiles, which take less time to reach their targets than ballistic weapons. Kim Jong-un, the country’s leader, promised to bolster the country’s defences at a recent meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

Pfizer announced plans to invest €520m ($594m) in France over the next five years as it ramps up production of covid-19 treatments. The American drugmaker said the plan includes a partnership with Novasep, a French pharmaceutical company, to help develop paxlovid, a promising antiviral covid-19 pill. The investment is part of Pfizer’s global effort to produce 120 million courses of the treatment this year.

Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for an attack on an industrial area near the airport of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, in which three people died. The Iran-backed Yemeni militants may have used drones to carry out the attack, which occurred 800 miles from Houthi territory. The rebels have claimed similar attacks in the past, always to be denied by the Emiratis.

A court in Paris fined Eric Zemmour, a far-right politician hoping to run in France’s presidential election in April, €10,000 for hate speech. The case was brought against him for comments about migrant children that he had made during a television appearance in 2020. Mr Zemmour’s lawyer said he would appeal against the verdict; it is his third such conviction.
