Also, reports suggest that the results of the inquiry into these gatherings by Sue Gray, a civil servant, will be handed over to the prime minister, Boris Johnson, later this week. Mr Johnson’s spokesman said he believes he has not broken any laws.

The IMF lowered its global growth forecast for 2022 as disruptions from covid-19, high inflation in America and China’s real estate woes led to markdowns in the world’s two largest economies. According to its latest World Economic Outlook, global GDP growth is expected to fall from 5.9% in 2021 to 4.4% this year and 3.8% in 2023.

Pfizer and BioNTech began a clinical trial of a vaccine targeted at the Omicron variant of covid-19. The drugmakers have already begun producing the new formula which could be available by March. Although Omicron seems to cause less serious illness and fewer deaths than some previous variants, antigenic mapping showing it is significantly different from them makes a compelling case for a new vaccine.

General Electric reported revenues for the final three months of 2021 of $20.3bn, down 3% from a year earlier. The American conglomerate cited supply-chain challenges and uncertainty over tax credits for wind production. GE, which will split into three public companies (aviation, energy and health-care), forecast revenue growth this year, especially as air travel recovers.

The Cameroonian president, Paul Biya, ordered an investigation into the tragedy, as did the Confederation of African football.

South Korea’s economy grew by 4% in 2021, the fastest pace of expansion in 11 years. Growth was driven by greater exports and construction activity which more than made up for the slow recovery in the covid-hit services sectors. The South Korean central bank expects exports to continue to power growth in 2022.
