Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, said Western countries had “ignored” his security demands in the crisis over Ukraine. America was motivated by the desire “to contain Russia’s development”, Mr Putin said, rather than out of real concern for Ukraine’s security. It was his first public statement about the rising tensions since December. Also on Tuesday Boris Johnson, Britain’s prime minister, travelled to Ukraine, where he vowed to find a diplomatic solution to the mounting crisis.

The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ Composite, two leading American stock indices, had a horrid January. The S&P closed the month down by 5.3%, its worst monthly performance since March 2020, saved from its worst January on record only by stronger performances on Friday and Monday. The NASDAQ meanwhile posted its worst January since 2008.

American oil supermajors did well in 2021, with ExxonMobil reporting profits of $23bn for the year and Chevron raking in $15.6bn, their highest profits in seven years. That marked a dramatic turnaround from 2020, when the price of future contracts for the West Texas Intermediate, the American oil benchmark, turned negative for the first time, causing billions in losses.

Manufacturing activity in the euro area rose to a five-month high as supply-chain bottlenecks eased. The final purchasing managers’ index by IHS Markit, a research firm, rose from 58 in December to 58.7 in January (above 50 indicates expansion). Though the data paint a mixed picture: growth rebounded in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands, but slowed in France, Greece and Italy.

Myanmar’s junta threatened to arrest people participating in a “silent strike” to mark the first anniversary of the coup on Tuesday. Activists have urged businesses to close and residents to stay indoors in protest. The generals warned people they would face long prison sentences should they participate in the strike. Businesses were threatened with asset seizures.

The office of Britain’s prime minister promised that a more complete report into parties held by members of government during the pandemic will be released once the police finish their investigation into the matter. Sue Gray, a senior civil servant, was forced to publish a heavily redacted version on Monday. She described a “failure of leadership” and called the soirees “difficult to justify”.

President Joe Biden designated Qatar as a “major non-NATO ally” of America. Only 17 other countries have been granted that status, which will give Qatar greater access to technology and training from America’s armed forces. Qatar is also one of the world’s largest suppliers of natural gas. The upgraded designation could reassure European countries concerned about natural gas shortages because of Russia’s conflict with Ukraine.

미 대통령은 카타르를 미국의 “비 NATO 국 동맹”으로 지정했다. 이 지위는 다른 17개국만 보유한 것으로, 카타르는 이번 지위 승격을 통해 미군 기술과 훈련을 활용할 기회가 높아졌다. 카타르는 전세계적으로 천연가스를 많이 공급하는 국가다. 이번에 지위가 승격됨으로써 러시아와 우크라이나 간 갈등으로 인한 천연가스 부족 현상에 대한 우려가 완화될 수 있다.
