President Joe Biden announced that American forces killed Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Qurashi, the leader of the militant group Islamic State. Thirteen civilians, including children, reportedly died during the raid, which occurred in Syria’s Idlib province. IS named the previously unknown Mr al-Qurashi as its head in 2019, days after Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, its former leader, was killed in a similar mission.

Following good results from ExxonMobil and Chevron, Shell, another oil giant, announced its highest fourth-quarter profits in eight years. Higher commodity prices and rebounding global economic growth drove adjusted earnings up 55% compared with the previous quarter to $6.4bn, beating analysts’ forecasts by $1.2bn. Russia’s decision to restrict supplies to Europe and increasing Chinese imports have driven up prices.

In October ASEAN barred the ruling junta’s leader from a summit.

Shares in Meta, Facebook’s parent company, fell by over 20% in post-market trading after it gave a weaker-than-expected revenue forecast, of $27bn-29bn, for the current quarter. Net income in the fourth quarter of 2021, $10.3bn, was down by 8% year over year, as investment in the metaverse ate into profits and users spent less time on the platform. Separately, streaming giant Spotify reported revenue of €2.7bn ($3bn), an increase of 24% year on year. But its downbeat forecast for new subscriptions also sent its shares tumbling by around 20% after hours.

Turkey’s annual inflation rate soared to 48.7% in January, a 20-year high and the highest level since the ruling Justice and Development Party came into power in 2003. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president, disagrees with the widely-accepted economic belief that higher interest rates temper inflation. He has repeatedly forced the central bank to slash rates, even as inflation has spiralled upwards.

Erin O’Toole, leader of Canada’s Conservative party, was voted out of office by a comfortable majority of his party’s legislators. Mr O’Toole, a moderate, was only in the role for 17 months but had led the party to defeat in last year’s general elections. He did not take his firing lightly, proclaiming that “I’m not going anywhere and I’m not turning back.”

New Zealand announced plans to reopen its borders in phases, having been closed for nearly two years. Vaccinated New Zealanders along with some skilled workers will soon be allowed to enter. Meanwhile Sweden, which has adopted a more lax attitude towards covid, said it would be lifting all restrictions next week, even as it reports record levels of infections.
