Israel will launch an inquiry into allegations that the police used Pegasus spyware to snoop on politicians, journalists and citizens. It comes after Calcalist, a local newspaper, accused officers of using the powerful software, created by Israel’s NSO Group, without a court order. Although Israel is loth to regulate its spyware exports, the allegations have caused a stir at home.

Emmanuel Macron, France’s president, began talks with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Moscow to try to defuse the mounting tension over Ukraine. Russia now has in place an estimated 70% of the combat forces needed to mount a full invasion of Ukraine, according to American officials. America said it would send nearly 3,000 soldiers to NATO allies in eastern Europe, although these would not be deployed to fight within Ukraine. Britain is also sending more troops to Poland.

Frontier Group, an American budget airline, is buying its rival, Spirit Airlines, in a deal worth $6.6bn that should close in the second half of the year. The merger will create America’s fifth-largest carrier, putting pressure on the larger airlines serving the domestic market, the Caribbean and Latin America. The companies said the merger could save $1bn annually, with no lay-offs.

But tentative signs that supply-chain bottlenecks are easing suggest production is likely to start rising. The Ifo index, a measure of business sentiment, grew for the first time in six months in January and Germany’s purchasing-managers’ index rose to a four-month high.

Further relaxation will be especially welcome for the tourism and international-education industries.

Parts of the city’s downtown area have been blocked for a week by trucks forming a “freedom convoy”. Demonstrations—which have broadened to encompass more general anti-government sentiment—have since spread to other big Canadian cities.

Economic growth in Indonesia accelerated in the last quarter of 2021, driven by record levels of exports. The economy grew by 5% year-on-year between October and December, following a 3.5% expansion in the previous quarter. Overall growth for 2021 was 3.7%. Economists expect the economy to slow down in 2022 as the country rolls back its monetary- and fiscal-stimulus programmes.
