U.S. Stocks Slip as Israel-Iran Conflict Continues (WSJ. 20250617)

US stocks slipped after hopes for a quick resolution to the Israel-Iran conflict dimmed. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 299 points to close at 42,216, the S&P 500 lost 50 points, and the Nasdaq declined 180 points. President Trump said he's losing patience with Iran as the US expands its military footprint in the region. Trump called for Iran's unconditional surrender and said he wouldn't target the country's leader, quote, "For now." The journal previously reported that Iran has signaled it wishes to de-escalate hostilities with Israel. Oil prices rallied as the conflict continued, with benchmark US futures at around $75 a barrel. New Commerce Department data out today showed US retail sales shrank more than expected in May. Sales fell 0.9% from the month before, mostly due to a plunge in auto purchases. In individual companies trading today, shares of gene editing company, Verve Therapeutics surged more than 81% after Eli Lilly agreed to buy the company for about $1 billion up front, and solar energy stocks tumbled after Senate Republicans backed a full phase out of solar and wind energy tax credits in Trump's megabill. Shares of SunRun plunged 40%, Enphase Energy fell 24%, and First Solar dropped 18%.
