Oil Tankers Collide in Gulf of Oman as Israel-Iran War Disrupts Shipping (WSJ. 20250617)

Two oil tankers have caught fire after colliding in the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. UK Maritime Operations, which tracks vessel threats and incidents in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, warned that navigational systems are getting disrupted as a result of ongoing military operations between Iran and Israel. All 24 crew members were evacuated. The European Union has proposed a sweeping ban on Russian oil and gas imports by the end of 2027, aiming to cut energy ties with Moscow. The ban would take effect in stages starting on January 1st of next year and now awaits approval from the European Parliament and Council. U.S. consumer spending saw an unexpected drop in May. The Commerce Department says retail sales fell 0.9% primarily due to fewer auto purchases. Many Americans rushed to buy cars before President Trump launched his major tariffs this year, hoping to avoid higher prices. Even without vehicles, sales fell 0.3%. To date, inflation has ticked up only modestly this year. And U.S. import prices were mostly unchanged last month. Labor Department data out today found that prices rose a tenth of a percent from the month before. Imported fuel prices slumped by 4%, but were balanced out by a 0.3% rise in non-fuel imports, resulting in overall stability.
